Of course it is!

And by the way, this whole new API and concept proves Twitter’s interest in a new self-owned datacenter. Heck, User Streams API needs a lot of bandwith and infrastructure. The world will be instant. Like, real instant or like, IM instant.

TNW did mention a kind of bug/problem related thing. New User Streams API will be useless for power users (read: Scoble and his friends). Either they (Twitter) should make the new API opt-in/opt-out with a Settings option — which is, I think, very likely to happen or Scoble and his friends should a) unfollow a ton of people b) setup new accounts (pointless, in my opinion).

There’s also a new concept. Again, TNW points it out. An idea of implementing Favorites into a built-in Retweet system (I imagine it as something like Flickr’s favorites which are now together with comments in comments format.).

I love favorites. Yes, I am the very single person after Scoble who favorites tweets. It’s very handy when I’m with my iPhone outside and see interesting tweets for great articles and stuff like this. It serves as an Instapaper for my Twitter. Yes, I know there’s Instapaper on Twitter for iPhone. Whatever..

As with Flickr, I’m against this new favorites implementation. I don’t see it as a Twitter’s “Like” button. I’m positive though, that the Twitter guys will surprise us. Or at least, I hope so.

Back on the real-time thingie. We’ll all like it. A lot. I was looking for a such upgrade since May or June, mainly on my Tweetie desktop client. During the summer I found out that I was desperately looking for it on Twitter for iPhone. So, guessing from my experiences and keeping in mind that you follow under 1,000 thousand people (I follow 540), I bet it will be great.

I’m just wondering how Twitter will solve — not only their’s — bandwith problem. I mean, being mobile with a data plan it’s ok nowadays but won’t Twitter for iPhone will fetch a lot of calls (read: MBs of your data plan in the long shot), especially if you follow a lot of people and they tweet like a thousand monkeys on keyboards. A good solution could be if Twitter would sum-up 5-10 tweets at a time and send them to you (if you’re mobile) in intervals. That’s a lot of nerd-talk in their geeky meetings I guess.

Conclusion

Straightforward: I like it. It will bring Twitter into the next level and I am sure about this. There’s a small technical problem that can be easily hacked-around. Σε αυτό το post θα δούμε πως μπορείτε να φτιάξετε το δικό σας Twitter-like χώρο στο internets για την παρέα σας ή ακόμη και για τη δουλειά σας. Είναι αρκετά απλό και εύκολο ως προς την κατασκευή και διαχείρισή του.  Για να το φτιάξουμε, θα χρειαστούμε οπωσδήποτε μια WordPress installation. Οπότε, εάν έχετε κάποιο private hosting μπορείτε να φτιάξετε ένα subdomain και να εγκαταστήσετε (και) εκεί το WordPress, αντίθετα εάν δεν έχετε κάποιο hosting plan, ένα WordPress.com blog μας καλύπτει απόλυτα.

Ιδέα για όλο αυτό την κλειστού τύπου επικοινωνία ενώ υπάρχει το Facebook, Twitter κ.α. ήταν το ίδιο το P2 theme που με το που είδα σκέφτηκα ότι θα ήταν αρκετά χρήσιμο εάν το φτιάξω για την παρέα μου μόνο – για να έχουμε ακόμη πιο προσωπικό χώρο απ’ το Facebook, ώστε να επικοινωνούμε μεταξύ μας.

Αρχικά εγκαθιστούμε το καινούργιο WordPress στο subdomain που έχουμε κάνει ή δημιουργούμε το WordPress.com blog – ανάλογα με την περίπτωση του καθενός. Οδηγίες πως να εγκαταστήσετε το WordPress μέσω FTP εάν δεν ξέρετε ήδη θα βρείτε στο πολύ καλό codex της WordPress.

Αφού λοιπόν εγκατασταθεί το WordPress / δημιουργήσατε το blog, πρέπει να επιλέξουμε το theme. Το οποίο theme, είναι το ίδιο το Twitter-like module. Όπου χωρίς να είστε στο /wp-admin backend του blog γράφετε τα μικρά posts-statuses σας και τα βλέπουν οι υπόλοιποι φίλοι σας με την υποστήριξη tag, replies/comments και edit. Το πως θα το χαρακτηρίσετε, δηλαδή εάν μοιάζει τελικά στα Facebook statuses ή στα tweets του Twitter είναι δικό σας θέμα. Το ποιο σημαντικό feature του είναι το real-time update του, δηλαδή κάθε φορά που γράφει κάποιος ένα καινούργιο post ή comment/reply δεν θα χρειάζεται να πατήσετε F5 ή refresh γιατί απλά το φορτώνει αυτόματα μέσω AJAX. Για την ιστορία το theme λέγεται P2 και είναι δημιουργία της ίδιας της Automattic και του Matt για την ενδοεταιρική επικοινωνία. Ενδιαφέρον, right?

Λοιπόν, το P2 theme μπορείτε να το κατεβάσετε από το αντίστοιχο theme directory του WordPress. Ακόμη, μπορείτε να διαβάσετε την αναλυτική παρουσίασή του από την Heather και τέλος, το post του Matt Mullenweg για το πως το ίδιο το theme άλλαξε την Automattic.

Ας περάσουμε όμως τώρα στο σετάρισμα του blog. Επειδή όπως είπαμε το project μας είναι για την παρέα ή για τον κλειστό οικογενειακό κύκλο ή ακόμη και για την δουλειά (όπως στην περίπτωση της Automattic) δεν θέλουμε τρίτοι να μπορούν να γράφουν και στην καλύτερη καν να μη μπορούν να δουν το site.

Το πρώτο θα το πραγματοποιήσουμε πηγαίνοντας στις ρυθμίσεις General του WordPress μας και ξε-τσεκάρουμε το Anyone can register. Στη συνέχεια ενεργοποιούμε τα Atom Publishing και XML-RPC επιλογές από τα Writing Settings. Στο Reading Settings δεν χρειάζεται να αλλάξουμε τίποτα, αλλά στο Discussion Settings ξε-τσεκάρουμε στο πεδίο Before a comment appears τις δύο επιλογές, τσεκάρουμε στο Other comment settings τα Users must be registered and logged in to comment, Comment author must fill out name and e-mail και Break comments into pages. Στα Privacy Settings τσεκάρουμε την δεύτερη επιλογή, I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors και τέλος στα Permalinks Settings βάζουμε στο Custom Field αυτή την επιλογή: /%postname%/.

Τώρα αφού επιλέξαμε το Users must be registed and logged in to comment πρέπει να φτιάξουμε αντίστοιχα και το user registration κομμάτι της υπόθεσης. Όπως είπαμε το network αυτό θέλουμε να είναι κλειστού κύκλου, άρα δεν θέλουμε να δίνουμε τη δυνατότητα στον οποιονδήποτε να μπορεί να εγγραφεί. Η λύση είναι απλή και λέγεται manual user registering. Δηλαδή – εσείς θα πηγαίνετε στο tab Users > Add new για κάθε νέο μέλος που θέλετε να εγγραφεί. Αφού συμπληρώσετε username, όνομα – επίθετο, email και το password μην ξεχάσετε να τσεκάρετε το Send this password to the new user by email. Το password τώρα φροντίστε να είναι κάτι απλό πχ 1234 ώστε μετά ο κάθε χρήστης από το User > Your Profile να μπορεί να το αλλάξει. Στο πεδίο Role βάλτε Author και είστε έτοιμοι!

Πρακτικά, είστε έτοιμοι να αρχίσετε να γράψετε το πρώτο status και να ξεκινήσει η κουβέντα. Μην ξεχάσετε να βάζετε τα tags σωστά για να είναι εύκολα indexed όλα τα posts στο μέλλον!

(Συγχωρέστε με που στο site – στο feed είναι οκ απ’ όσο είδα ούτε εκεί είναι οκ, έχει μεγάλα gaps από βήμα σε βήμα - οι εικόνες εμφανίζονται στα δεξιά. Είναι ένα πρόβλημα – τουλάχιστον για μένα – του .css του theme. Σκοπεύω να το αλλάξω. Προς το παρών ελπίζω να μην σας την σπάει όσο εμένα.) Όλα οκ τώρα. Έφτιαξα το .css template!

Αυτό θα είναι το τελικό αποτέλεσμα μας:

Βήμα 1ο

Δημιουργήστε ένα καινούργιο αρχείο στο Photoshop File > New με διαστάσεις 1800*1000

Βήμα 2ο

Κάντε δεξί κλικ στο Rectangle Tool και επιλέξτε στη συνέχεια το Rounded Rectangle Tool. Σχεδιάστε ένα κάθετο (με αναλογία περίπου από όσο μου φάνηκε 2:1) στην πάνω αριστερά γωνία της εικόνας, όπου θα είναι και η βάση του κειμένου με τις πληροφορίες μας. Αυτόματα θα δημιουργηθεί και ένα καινούργιο layer, αυτό του σχήματος που μόλις φτιάξαμε. Ονόμαστε το εάν θέλετε Shape 1 ή text_box.

Βήμα 3ο

Πατήστε Ctrl+Shift+N για να δημιουργήσετε έναν καινούργιο layer, αυτόν του background όπου θα βάλουμε. Ονομάστε το layer όπως θέλετε. Εγώ το άφησα Layer 1 ώς έχει μιας και δεν μου αποτελεί πρόβλημα αφού τα υπόλοιπα layers είναι ονομασμένα. Τώρα προσθέστε το background σας. Εάν δεν καταλαμβάνει όλο το canvas του αρχείο μας, πατήστε Ctrl+T για να το κάνετε resize – προσέξτε!, όχι πολύ, μην χαλάσει η ανάλυση. Εάν και πάλι δεν καταλαμβάνει όλο τον διαθέσιμο χώρο, μην ανυσηχείτε.

Βήμα 4ο

Επιλέξτε τώρα το Text tool και γράψτε πάνω στο dummie box που φτιάξαμε πιο πριν τις πληροφορίες που θέλετε για εσάς. Εγώ τις δικές μου τις είχα έτοιμες σε ξεχωριστό .psd (μόνο αυτές τις είχα σε .psd) και μόνο άλλαξα την καινούργια διεύθηνση του gmail/gtalk μου. Τα εικονίδια είναι του καταπληκτικού Spoongraphics που χρησιμοποίησα, τα βρήκα από το Greektuts.net, ένα καινούργιο site με ελληνικά tutorials σχετικά με design – web design. 

Θυμηθείτε το κάθε κειμενάκι και εικονίδιο να έιναι ξεχωριστό layer και στο τέλος βάλτε σε ένα folder τα layers με τα εικονίδια και τα αντίστοιχα κείμενα σας, ώστε να είναι πιο τακτοποιημένα.

 Βήμα 5ο

Αφού λοιπόν, γράψατε το/τα κειμενά σας, ήρθε η ώρα για το visual edit του box. Πάτε στο Gradient tool κάντε δεξί κλικ και επιλέξτε το Paint Bucket tool. Διαλέξτε το επιθυμητό χρώμα και βάψτε το. Στη συνέχεια κάντε δεξί κλικ στο layer του dummie box και επιλέξτε Blending Options. Εδώ τώρα, τσεκάρετε το Outer glow και παίξτε με το χρώμα και τις τιμές για να πετύχετε ένα επιθυμητό απότελεσμα. Το δικό μου μπορείτε να το βρείτε στην παρακάτω εικόνα. (Σημείωση: στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα μου, που είναι ανεβασμένο και στο twitter account μου, έχω κάνει κάποιες αλλαγές σε σχέση με το τελικό του tutorial αυτού. Μην ανυσηχείτε – δεν έιναι τίποτα παραπάνω, απλά και μόνο ξανα-έπαιξα λίγο με τα Blending Options και το εσωτερικό χρώμα του box).

Επίσης αλλάξτε και το opacity αλλά και fill του dummie box ώστε να γίνει διαφανές και πιο stylized.

Βήμα 6ο

Τέλος! Αυτό ήταν. Δεν έχει 6ο βήμα, γιατί πολύ απλά πλέον το προσωπικό μας Twitter background είναι έτοιμο για upload στο profile μας. Ευχαριστώ που διαβάσατε το πρώτο μου Photoshop tutorial. Οποιεσδήποτε παρατηρήσεις, τυχόν απορίες και ερωτήσεις είναι ευπρόσδεκτες στα σχόλια!

Αναμφίβολα όμως, το πιο καλό Firefox Twitter addon είναι το Twitterfox. Απλό, εύχρηστο, χωρίς να καταναλώνει πολλά system resources και χωρίς να αποσπάει την προσοχή, παραμόνον όταν έρχονται καινούργια tweets και ανάλογα πως είναι ρυθμισμένο, άλλωστε είχα γράψει γι’ αυτό τον Αύγουστο.

To θέμα μας είναι όμως το web interface και όχι τα addons. Γι’ αυτόν τον λόγο θα χρειαστούμε το Greasemonkey. Το Greasemonkey, είναι ένα addon που μέσα από JavaScript scripts που φτιάχνουν χρήστες ανά τον κόσμο μπορεί να αλλάζει το layout και λειτουργίες μια σελίδας. Αφού κατέβει και εγκατασταθεί, τότε πηγαίντε στο Userscripts, είναι το site όπου είναι μαζεμένα όλα τα scripts.

Μετά το re-design του Twitter, έχει αλλάξει ριζικά το layout αλλά και η πρόσβαση σε διάφορες key functions όπως Replies και Direct Messages. Γενικά, για το προσωπικό αυτό redesign χρειάζονται δύο Greasemonkey scripts και ένα addon. Η πρώτη αλλαγή θα είναι στην παρουσίαση των replies. Αντί να χρειάζεται να μεταβούμε σε καινούργια σελίδα, τα replies θα παρουσιάζονται στην sidebar. Αυτό μπορεί να γίνει κατεβάζοντας και εγκαθιστώντας το Twitter Sidebar Replies script.Πρωτοποριακό ε; Η δεύτερη αλλάγη είναι πιο ριζική. Μετά από αυτή θα μπορείτε να αφήνετε μονίμως ένα tab στο Twitter ανοιχτό. Νομίζω πως καταλάβατε, είναι το περιβόητο auto refresh που τόσο πολύ/πολλοί θέλουμε. Εγκαθιστώντας το twitter_auto_refresh script καταφέρνουμε να φέρουμε ένα βήμα πιο κοντά το Twitter σε εμάς.

Όπως είπα όμως, χρειαζόμαστε και ένα ακόμη addon πέραν του Twitterfox, το οποίο θα μας βοηθάει στο autocomplete των @replies αλλά και direct messages που στέλνουμε. Το addon λέγεται Tw-autocomplete.

Νομίζω, ότι με αυτά τα τέσσερα tweaks για το Twitter, το web interface του έχει καταλήξει να λειτουργεί σαν ένα standalone client. Προσωπικά, σταμάτησα πλέον τη χρήση του Twitterfox, εκτός αν και δε θέλω να φύγω για διάφορους λόγους από το tab που βρίσκομαι. Γενικότερα όμως, προτιμώ περισσότεροτο web interface.

Commenting on blog posts first of all motivates the blogger to continue up writing and working for his blog and his readers. Furthermore, comments show that people are interested in his work and want to participate; adding more information, say and share their opinions, remarking you possibly mistakes, give feedback or at least say a hi.

With social networking, blog aggregators, mash-up’s commenting goes directly to the blogger/writer under his profile. That’s bad and good though. It depends on few things. For example it’s bad because new blogs and bloggers need comments for a lot of reasons (feedbacking, motivating etc.). A new and not-so-well-known blog needs “tradiotional” commenting to show in it’s homepage after every post the comments it had, so it will be more attractive for future readers and they may re-consider about this new blog, “Hey, there is a number of people who are spending their time here, so it’s interesting and maybe it worths the time I’ll spend and I may subscribe to the RSS feed”.

On the other hand, it’s easier and better for popular blogs to have their comments, let’s say at Friendfeed. A big community which is behind each popular blog, will not have to go every time to comment or to see any new comments from their last visit to the blog’s page. Friendfeed does this. Friendfeed includes auto-refresh so I can open a new tab with Friendfeed opened, comment and not hit F5 (Refresh) every ten seconds to see if there is a new comment. With the auto-refresh feature Friendfeed reloads automatically the particular part of the page for me, not having to reload the whole page.

Another one thing is that blog commenting is getting enhanced too. We can video-comment with Seesmic. Beeing in an early stage yet, video-commenting, has a lack of important features like no reply, quotes, or normal text to copy and paste which don’t exist.

Regarding my sentence in the first paragraph mentioning about the small community of my readers, I would like to explain it a bit and take it a step further. I don’t mean that you guys don’t deserve anything etc, but I think you could write some feedback, remarks, or say your opinion about a post of mine. That could be done also via e-mail. My point is that I don’t have any communication with you. And that’s bad for me because I would like to hear your comments and ideas to get and write better. : – )

Σήμερα σκέφτηκα ότι αν κάποιος θα μπορούσε ή θα είχε όρεξη να το φτιάξει θα μπορούσε να προσθέσει και το Delicious. Δηλαδή ότι κάναμε share να γινόταν dugg και bookmarked και ότι θα κάναμε digg να γινόταν κατευθείαν share και bookmarked και ότι κάναμε bookmark να γινόταν shared και dugg. Εκτός από την πρώτη επιλογή τα υπόλοιπα δύο προϋποθέτουν με τη σειρά τους το link που θα κάνουμε digg/bookmark να υπάρχει σαν post μέσα σε ένα feed του Google Reader, πράγμα σπάνιο, άρα υπάρχουν δύο επιλογές. Ή ο developer να φτιάξει checkboxes με τα οποία να διαλέγουμε τι θέλουμε από τις 3 επιλογές ή απλά το share στο Google Reader δεν θα υφίσταται καν αν κάνουμε bookmark ή digg.

Bέβαια αφού έγραψα την παραπάνω ιδέα πολύ περιληπτικά σε δύο tweets (πρώτο, δεύτερο), o Νikan είπε ότι τα ελληνικά posts δεν πρόκειτε να “περπατήσουν” και να ανταγωνιστούν τα ξενόγλωσσα / δηλαδή τα αγγλικά, αλλά όταν γράφουν κάποιοι κάτι στα αγγλικά θα μπορούσε να γίνει μια συντωνισμένη προσπάθεια. Mε βάση την συντονισμένη προσπθάθεια, πρόσθεσα ότι υπάρχει πιθανότητα, αλλά φυσικά μόνο στα γραμμένα στα αγγλικά posts από Έλληνες. Δηλαδή ότι όταν κάποιος blogger γράψει ένα αξιόλογο και αξιοπρόσεχτο post να λέει στο Twitter ή στο Facebook και γενικά σε socializing υπηρεσίες, “ξέρετε έγραψα αυτό νομίζω ότι αξίζει για να το digg-άρετε plz” έτσι ώστε να φτάσει στα 100 diggs (στην καλύτερη) αλλά στο μεταξύ θα το έχουν δει και ξένοι και υπάρχει πιθανότητα να φύγει από τα Upcoming και να πάει στο main category του. 100 diggs? Δεν είναι πολλά? Ναι, όντως είναι αλλά θυμηθείτε τι έγινε με τo Firefox 3 Download Day. 50-60 ήμασταν στην αρχή και μετά φτάσαμε τα χιλιάρικα στα pledges.

Βέβαια, αν αυτό καταντήσει σε information-overflow (στην καλύτερη) και όχι στο να ζητάει ο κάθε blogger τα digg του, δεν θα υπάρχει πρόβλημα. Αλλά αν καταλήξουμε στη δεύτερη περίπτωση (κακό του κεφαλιού μας που λένε δηλαδή) τότε θα υπάρξη πρόβλημα. Αλλά ακόμη δεν σκέφτηκα μια πιθανή λύση για την δεύτερη κατάληξη. :-)

Twitbin

Twitbin is something like a sidebar of Firefox. It’s like when you open your browsing history, except from displaying your visited URLs it displays your and your friends tweets. It is very easy to use though. But the GUI and the logging in/preferences are not well designed. First of all supposing you run this addon for first time you can’t easily understand where to login with your Twitter account or to change the addon’s preferences. You can’t understand them with ease in your first time. One more negative is that it “eats” your browsing window making each site you visit a bit smaller. Finally, Twitbin makes too many API requests to Twitter within an hour. That causes sometimes that you can’t see any more tweets from all of your Twitter apps (they all use the same API) and you must visit the twitter website to keep up-to-date with future tweets.

Twitterbar

Our second addon is Twitterbar. Twitterbar is sitting in your location bar without to be noisy with new tweets, replies, direct messages etc. The only thing you can do with Twitterbar is to upload tweets. You can write your text in the location bar and then hit the button next to it and your tweet will meet the Twitterland. Twitterbar is also very ideal for posting and sharing website links quickly, as the button which uploads your tweet is still noticable. Also it supports character counting to know what you write.

Twitterfox

The last addon and the best IMHO. It’s the only Firefox Twitter Addon that supports Replies and Direct Messages and of course your timeline of the people you follow. The layout is well-made – each tweet has it’s user’s pic without consuming too many available space. There is a reply button and three tabs under the tweets; Recent, Replies, Direct. Another feature of Twitterfox is the ability to write down the URL you currently visit. Lastly, it supports multiple accounts on the same app.

Conclusion

I’ve been using all three of them. I can say that Twitterbar is really very cool, although I don’t use it for sharing links (I use urlBorg for this) but it’s funny to post from your location bar. Twitbin on the other hand, is the worst of these three addons. Too many API requests, sometimes other languages except English (i.e. Greek) have wrong rendering and makes the websites you visit smaller. Twitterfox -the best- is my favorite as you can see. Easy to use, supports direct messages, replies, links posting, multiple accounts and the GUI is pretty nice designed.
