So, this is the new design.

Some quick facts

They’ll be rolling out the fresh features to the entire Flickr audience in the coming weeks but there’s also a beta opt-in (just visit a photo page and follow the 1-click-instructions atop). Photos will now be displayed with a larger 640 pixel wide size — plus the photo page will be a bit wider.

The photo owner, dates taken, camera, and location (with a great Yahoo! Maps implementation) of the photo are all within easy reach to the top-right of the image. They’ve reorganized all of the helpful features that we already know into a handy Actions menu.

There’s also a brand new light box view to spotlight your photos (no need now for 3rd party sites). Favorites integration into the photo’s comments. Finally, improved navigation controls and performance on the photo page (yes, it is faster).

And some thoughts

I’d prefer the old-school buttons above the photo and not the new reorganized shiny bling bling thingie. These buttons were something like a trademark for Flickr, don’t you think? I don’t like the idea that all actions will be packed under a drop-down menu with more submenus and clicks. The photo page has become wider — so, why change the famous buttons?

The new “sidebar-like” structure with the photo owner, dates taken, camera, and location of the photo, all within reach to the right of the image is great. I mean, I like it a lot. There seems to be a bug, though. My photos were taken using an iPhone 3GS and not 3G.

The light box vew is ultra fast. Like, ultra fast multiplied by fast. The next/previous works absolutely great and the one-click enable/disable is quite of a cool concept.

Obviously, last but not least, the new width of the photos is very handy. More detail, more pixel love combined with Flickr photo quality equals more fun using the website.

Summing up

• Things I did like: new sidebar structure & layout, lightbox feature, larger photo width
• Things I didn’t like: new “Actions” menu, 3G/3GS bug, favorites-in-comments appearance

I updated through iTunes only after backing up my contacts and syncing them with Google. Now, I don’t think I’ll sync again with Google, because Gmail’s contacts are now mixed with my phone contacts. That’s silly. Really, silly. The positive is that now, I have backups from both Gmail and phone contacts.

The download of the new OS was fast enough and I didn’t have to wait that much. This is good. The installation took a little more than (I) expected, but as soon as everything’s okay I don’t mind it.

First feel

The first feel was like “superfast”. Give me speed. Yes, Apple give us more speed. When you swipe trough springboard & the home screens you feel like it’s a brand new phone. It feels uber fast. There’s also this new homescreen and lockscreen background that adds to this feeling.

First changes

First of all, Apple changed the icon graphics. Many of the icons have received very subtle tweaks that suggest Apple has done a complete re-drawing of the icon set, potentially for higher-resolution displays. The changes have in many cases added sharper lines to prior designs, such as the gears of the Settings icon and the rays of the Weather icon’s sun, but have also in some cases increased the color or contrast of small details in the icons.

Also, there’s this new dock that resembles the one found on the iPad, complete with icon reflections.

Multitasking

Probably iOS 4′s most awaited feature. I have to say that it’s awesome. With a double-tap of the home button the dock becomes a dock for already-running apps — whether you’re into another app or just swiping through your homescreens. There’s also this new fast app switching feature. It’s something like that: the “state” of the app stays in RAM but the app is technically suspended. That way it loads up faster than having to execute the app again from NAND Flash and loading to RAM and reading a saved state, also from NAND

Folders

Yeah, Folders! Everyone was so super excited about this but me. Anyway, it’s pretty cool I guess. But, personally, I don’t think I’ll use it. Just tap onto an app, hold so they start bouncing and then drop the app onto another app. iOS instantly combines them into this folder and names it automatically with the category of the apps. Could become handy, but not for me.

The iPod

iPod has also changed; for the better. You can now add/edit/delete playlists right from your phone. The contents of albums are now displayed by the iPod application with extra duration, release date, and artist information, plus a shuffle button and album art.

Camera

We’ve got digital zoom dudes & girls! This is big news! You can pinch or tap-and-hold to activate the digital zoom feature, and a slider appears on screen to let you set the zoom level. There’s also tap-to-focus ability to video recording. This is whoop whoop! (click on the screenshot to see it’s real size — 768 x 1024, that’s big and I like it!)

Other cool stuff

There’s been added Greek Voice control. That’s cool and I like it (though, haven’t used Voice control since the first day I got the iPhone). Also Location Services have been expanded to turn off or on specific applications’ access to GPS data. Additionally, Notes now supports wireless syncing with multiple accounts. Syncing appears to be supported for any IMAP-based Mail account, rather than being a MobileMe-specific feature. That’s also cool. There are also new features in the Photo.app. There is the Places tab, which show geo-tagged where you snapped the photos. People say that there’s also a Faces tab & a rotate-photo option, but it seems that I don’t have them.

Verdict

Well, iOS 4 rocks big time. It feels like a new iPhone. It’s not just another update. It’s a whole new concept of the iPhone. If I were you, I’d stop by now reading this post and start updating. Despite I was with a jailbrake (only because of the SBSettings app — a cool home screen addon, like a dashboard), I updated and I do not regret it. You should do.

There are three core differences (except the price) that make me say, yet again, “Air rocks big time.”

Reason 1: The Screen

Bigger. Brighter. Clearer. Better. That is, the Air’s screen. It may be only 13.3″ comparing to the 10″ of my netbook, but may I say you that this is a BIG difference. It’s like using a 24″ iMac or something like that. The feel after the transition between Air and netbook or vice versa is remarkable. It’s not a Retina display, I know, but it’s the feel that relaxes your eyes and your focus. More workspace. More happiness.

Reason 2: CPU and the such

2.13Ghz of pure Intel Core 2 Duo power. Versus the Intel Atom N270 1.60Ghz. I guess, Air wins here too. Mind the graphics too. The Air uses a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M whilst on the other hand, the Turbo-X notebook is making cool things with a Intel GMA 950 GPU. Nevertheless, the RAM plays a significant role too; 2Gb of RAM instead of 1Gb is also a good sign. Summing up, hardware on the Air rocks big time, for it’s size capabilities.

Reason 3: Software

I’m not gonna talk about iLife. We all know it’s a great software suite/package. I’m gonna talk about how smoothly every single program runs in Mac OS X. No crashes. No lags. No nothing. Even the OS is pretty much like a “rockstar” itself. Your work-flow is never stopping. Plus that you can find many great apps such as Coda, Tweetie, Things, Grapher and many, many more. Basically, it’s the UX (User Experience) that’s a solid “win” for everyone.

Concluding, I have to admit that once you go Mac you never come back. It’s a whole different realm of computers and technology. Of concept and ideas. Of design and user experience. Despite that Steve may becoming sometimes an ass, you can’t deny that Apple, nowadays, makes the best machines out there. Call it iMac, Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iWhatever; it’s a fact. And I highly recommend you becoming a switcher soon.

Πάνε 2 βδομάδες τώρα, που δουλεύω στο Macbook Air αντί για το αργό, βαρύτερο αλλά πιο μικρό Turbo-X Topnote netbook. Και δεν μετανιώνω καθόλου το switch από netbook σε laptop (και τί laptop!) και από Windows σε Mac OS X. Ούτε τεχνικά, αλλά κυρίως ούτε σε επίπεδο software! Στο software είναι που το OS X και η Apple κερδίζουν by far τον ανταγωνισμό είτε λέγεται Windows είτε Open Source Linux. Εδώ λοιπόν, είναι μια λίστα από τις εφαρμογές που πρέπει να έχει κάθε Mac user out there.

Browser: Google Chrome

Στην αρχή δούλευα με Safari. Μετά βγήκε ο Chrome επιτέλους και στους Mac. Τώρα είναι ο παράδεισος. Πιο γρήγορος από ποτέ στην latest beta build του και σε συνδυασμό με καταπληκτικά extensions, ο Chrome πλέον μπορεί να περηφανεύεται πως είναι ακόμα και σε επίπεδο extensions πιο καλός από τον Firefox — γιατί σε θέματα επιδόσεων, ήταν ήδη εδώ και καιρό.

Twitter client: Tweetie

Ο καλύτερος Twitter client εκεί έξω by far. Minimalism και usability στα καλύτερα τους. Multi-account και search support. Ιδανικός και για power-users παρόλο που δεν είναι columnized όπως οι ανταγωνιστές Tweetdeck και Seesmic Desktop. Το χρησιμοποιώ στην δωρέαν έκδοση με μία διαφήμιση στο timeline κάθε 1 ώρα περίπου (ποσοστό που αξίζει η free) ενώ κυκλοφορεί και στα $19.95.

ΙΜ client: Adium, Skype

Adium: Multi-account support, απλός και λιτός. Με Growl notifications και υποστήριξη MSN, GTalk, ICQ, MobileMe, Facebook, tabbed & of-the-record messaging, addons και άλλων πολλών και μέλος της Open Source κοινότητας, όλοι συμφωνούν πως δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος IM client.

Skype: Τίποτα παραπάνω, τίποτα λιγότερο από το αγαπημένο Skype που όλοι ξέρουμε, απλά γραμμένο σε native Mac κώδικα.

Media player: VLC

Βρίσκεται σε κάθε μηχάνημα κάθε χρήστη που σέβεται τον εαυτό του ως προς το media playback. Ο player που τα παίζει όλα και με πολλές άλλες λειτουργίες βρίσκεται και αυτός στην Mac-side of the game.

FTP & Filesharing: Cyberduck, Dropbox

Cyberduck: Ένας powerful open source FTP client με πολύ απλό και easy to use interface. Κερδίζει τις εντυπώσεις από την πρώτη στιγμή χάρη των πολύ καλών features του όπως multiple connections, resumable downloads, recursive transfers, bookmarks, folder synchronizations και άλλα. Συνεργάζεται τέλεια με Mac και Spotlight, Bonjour, Keychain & AppleScript.

Dropbox: Με το free plan 2Gb είναι ίσως το πιο δημοφιλές cloud file sharing service εδώ και καιρό. Υποστηρίζει Windows, Mac, Linux και κάνει την διακίνηση αρχείων μεταξύ αυτών παιχνιδάκι. Κάνετε λογαριασμό, κατεβάζετε τον client και μετά απολαμβάνετε να γίνονται όλα μόνα τους.

Code editor: Coda

Ο καλύτερος code editor που υπάρχει σε Mac, Windows και Linux. Παλιά, στα Windows-days χρησιμοποιούσα το Notepad++, εξαιρετικό, δωρεάν & opensource — από τους καλύτερους, αν όχι ο καλύτερος, code editor στα Windows. Όμως, ο Coda δεν συγκρίνεται με τίποτα και κανέναν. Κάνει τα πάντα από FTP client, live preview, learning/troubleshooting books μέχρι κα custom CSS editor είναι λίγα από τα στοιχεία που τον κάνει έναν από του καλύτερους editor που έχουν υπάρξει ποτέ. Κυκλοφορεί δωρέαν ή αλλιώς ψηλά, στα $99.

For the Mac users: Ποιές εφαρμογές χρησιμοποιείτε και ποιές θα συστήνατε σε έναν νέο switcher στους Mac;

As you may know, I love portability, because – especially in winter, I travel a lot. That’s why I bought a netbook last year. It did the job great. It is small, lightweight, portable, the battery lasts pretty much long and is comfortable to travel with. When I am at home, I plug it to a 19″ Samsung monitor and I feel like I’m using a normal desktop PC or just a more powerful laptop. But why did I change my mind now, almost a year after using and evangelizing netbooks?

Did you notice the word I used in the first paragraph? Powerful. Indeed, netbooks are ultralight, small and all that great stuff, but they miss something very important and since I was using one of them for a year, as a desktop replacement – it did all my work, let me tell you that. They miss power.

Power in both CPU and GPU.

Last week, my dad got a Macbook Air as a gift. Such a geek I am, I took it and tested it someway. The results are pretty much obvious for me now.

Lightweight & Ultraportable

Let’s face it. Macbook Air is the lightest and slimmest computer out there. It’s thin like an envelope and can travel with you everywhere, due to these two characteristics. Air may be not that small, like a netbook but the weight and portability provide a huge advantage.

OS

Mac OS X definitely owns Windows 7. Not only the GUI is better but also the backend. I’ve been using Windows XP and Windows 7 in my netbook and now Mac OS X and I can clearly see the differences. Speed, design, architecture. Every Mac is fully featured with a ton of greatful tools, like Finder and Airport – the greatest Wifi app I’ve ever used.

Battery life

4 hours. 4 hours of being of the cable. With the lightest laptop ever made. Priceless. And when you need it, the magnetic power cable is priceless, too. Boy, do I love this.

Power

By power, I mean both CPU and GPU power. I used my netbook for movie editing (doh!) for a little project called Fight The Line and it was laggy and slow as hell – in XP and 7. I wasn’t able to watch 720p HD movies in Youtube or Vimeo. That was a giant loss. Instead, in the Macbook Air everything runs smoothly. I can edit (and watch of course) even 1080p true HD video straight from my Toshiba S10 videocamera. 

Conclusion

I’m totally convinced now that netbooks are not anymore worth buying. Macbook Air wins them all. I prefer to give some money more, but to take back in quality, hardware, community, software and total user experience. I need power. Netbooks can’t give any power. On the other hand, they give portability, slimness, lightweight – all things ideal for traveling. But the Mac gives power too among all these factors. For sure I prefer the Mac.

Αν και τελικά δεν μπόρεσε να έρθει στο Wordcamp ο Nikolay Bachiyski, μέλος της Automattic για να παρουσιάσει το WordPress 3.0, το έκανε αυτό για εμάς ο “δικός μας” Βασίλης στην δική του παρουσίαση. In brief τα καλά παιδιά της Automattic ετοιμάζουν ένα νέο και robust WordPress. Αλλαγές, re-builds from scratch, νέα events και άλλα, θα παρουσιαστούν έτοιμα Μάρτιο (σύμφωνα με το Roadplan) ή αρχές καλοκαιριού όπως λένε οι φήμες.

Τι να περιμένουμε λοιπόν;

WordPress και WPMU merge

To WordPress από εδώ και πέρα θα προσφέρει από μόνο του το multi-user environment. Feature που μόνο χαμένο δεν θα πάει, αφού κάποιοι θα το εκτιμήσουν πολύ.

Media Gallery rebuild

Όλοι ξέρουμε για τα glitches που τρώει και bugs που έχει η αγαπημένη media gallery. Για αυτόν τον λόγο ο Matt and the crew δεν θα την αλλάξουν απλώς, αλλά θα την ξαναφτιάξουν από την αρχή. Εντελώς. Με νέα features και redesign θα είναι από τα core new things του WordPress 3.0.

Νέο default theme

Ή αλλιώς, bye bye Kubrick, hello Kirby! Ο Ian Stewart, developer του Thematics theme framework έκανε μια πρόταση για την αλλαγή του default theme. Και η WordPress τον άκουσε. Minimal design, clean code σύμφωνα με τα πρότυπα, ένα μεγάλο μπλε header, η δυνατότητα παραγωγής child themes και αγάπη για το WordPress συνθέτουν το νέο default theme του δημοφιλέστερου blogging platform.

Αλλαγές στα Core development teams

Οι μικρές dev teams θα μεγαλώσουν με την προσθήκη νέων ατόμων. Περισσότεροι beta testers και προσπάθεια στο “stick to the scedule” quote γιατί ξέρουμε πως μερικές φορές υπήρχε μια καθυστέρηση στο delivery updates και features.

WordPress Summer of Code

Όπως και το Google Summer of Code έτσι και το WordPress Summer of Code. Οι πληροφορίες λένε πως θα γίνει σε νησί, άρα γιατί όχι και σε εμάς;

Σύμφωνα με τις πληροφορίες του Βασίλη, αυτά είναι τα leaked features yet. Αν πάντως, κάτι είναι σίγουρο, αυτό είναι πως το WordPress 3.0 θα είναι καλύτερο από ποτέ.

Αφού πέρασα αρκετές μέρες με το καινούργιο μου iPhone 3GS και τις πρώτες εφαρμογές για αυτό, άρχισα να ψάχνω περισσότερο στο iTunes store της γειτονιάς μου (όπως λέει και ο Τιτάνας) με αποτέλεσμα να ανακαλύψω κάποιες επιπλέον δωρεάν εφαρμογές που πρέπει να είναι και στο δικό σας iPhone installed. Μετά λοιπόν τη πρώτη λίστα για τις must-have free iPhone apps, ήρθε και η ώρα για τη δεύτερη.

Convert Bot

Αυτή η εφαρμογή μπορεί πρακτικά να μετατρέψει τα πάντα όλα – από data size, typography (point-inch-pixel), χρόνο και βάρος μέχρι και ραδιενέργια. Μετά από όλα αυτά, μετατρέπει και νομισματικές μονάδες.

myHomework

Εξαιρετική εφαρμογή για όσους είναι ακόμη μαθητές (γκουχ, γκουχ) ή και φοιτητές. Παρέχει λίστα για τα καθημερινά καθήκοντα με υποστήριξη due dates/deadlines, εβδομαδιαίο πρόγραμμα μαθημάτων (όπου, ένα homework assignment μπορεί να δηλωθεί στο αντίστοιχο μάθημα που έχει φτιαχτεί ήδη).

Photonasis

Ένα Photoshop στο κινητό σας με πολλά φίλτρα (negative, sepia, emboss, threshold κ.α.) να επιλέξετε. Επίσης μπορείτε να βγάλετε επί τόπου την φωτογραφία και κατευθείαν μετά να την editάρετε. Κάνει καλή δουλειά αλλά μερικά φίλτρα αργούν αρκετά πολύ.

Pixel Perfect

Αντίστοιχο του Photonasis αλλά αρκετά πιο απλό. Ξεκινάει με το να επιλέξετε κατευθείαν φωτογραφία. Με λιγότερα φίλτρα βέβαια, αλλά καλύτερο design και usability μου φέρνει την εντύπωση ότι κάποιες φορές κάνει καλύτερη δουλειά από το Photonasis.

Pop art like

Με το Pop art Like έχετε το κλασσικό πλέον effect των webcam όλων των iMacs και Macbooks, το κάνε-με-μπλε-κίτρινο-πράσινο-κόκκινο-δεξιά-αριστερά-πάνω-κάτω όπως ο Warhol την Monroe.

CropForFree, HDRforFree και FlashForFree

Τρεις εφαρμογές από την Free the Apps – εταιρεία όπου λανσάρει μόνο προσεγμένες δωρεάν εφαρμογές, που κάνουν ότι λέει και το όνομα τους. Το CropForFree cropάρει φυσικά τις φωτογραφίες – μια δυνατότητα  που λείπει out of the box από το iPhone. Το HDRforFree σας κάνει τις φωτογραφίες HDR, με πολύ καλά αποτελέσματα ομολογουμένως και το FlashForFree αναλαμβάνει να φωτίσει τις σκούρες φωτογραφίες σας σαν να είχατε ήδη flash στο κινητό όταν βγάζατε την φωτογραφία.

Έτσι λοιπόν, ολοκληρώνεται και η δεύτερη λίστα με τις must have δωρεάν iPhone εφαρμογές. Εάν θέλετε να προσθέσετε κάποια ή να αφήσετε κάποια σχόλια, you know your way in comments.

Αφού λοιπόν κατάφερα και πήρα στα χέρια μου επιτέλους το iPhone 3GS περιμένοντας υπομονετικά αυτή τι στιγμή και μετά τα απαραίτητα activations κλπ στο iTunes, το iPhone μπήκε σχεδόν αυτόματα στο Wifi του σπιτιού -μόνο το key έπρεπε να βάλω- και εγώ μπήκα σχεδόν κατευθείαν με τη σειρά μου στο φημισμένο Appstore να κατεβάσω τα uber cool iPhone apps που για αυτά άκουγα τόσο πολλά τον τελευταίο καιρό. Πριν το κάνω αυτό όμως είχα ρωτήσει τον διεθνούς φήμης Apple geek, mr. Sigalakos για κάποια hints για δωρεάν apps αλλά λόγω διακοπών δεν ήταν σε θέση (δεν πειράζει φυσικά) να μου πει – είπε βέβαια ότι θα γράψει για αυτά, αλλά αφού λοιπόν δε γύρισε ακόμη (τυχερέ :-)) τον πρόλαβα και παρουσιάζω την λίστα μου με τα πιο must-have apps – ύστερα φυσικά από τα εξαντλητικά tests μου. (LMAO)

Πλέον υπάρχει και part 2 γιατί ανακάλυψα καινούργιες εφαρμογές που αξίζουν.

Facebook

Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ σε αντίθεση με κάποιες κριτικές που διάβασα στο internets. Must για όσους περνάν αρκετή ώρα από τη ζωή τους (και) στο Facebook. Υπάρχει η δυνατότητα direct upload φωτογραφίας από την κάμερα αλλά και Camera Roll & Albums. Μεγάλο “συν” η λίστα με τους φίλους σας. Καθαρό και εύκολο layout και design παντού – ακόμη ένα συν. Ακόμη έχει και υποστήριξη για chat.

Twitterfon

Για απαιτητικούς Twitters που έχουν κολλήσει το μικρόβιο. Πολύ καλά φτιαγμένο με tabs για το Friends stream, Mentions, Messages, Favs και Search. Αν και εφοδιασμένο με μια διαφίμηση πιστεύω ότι είναι το καλύτερο δωρεάν twitter client για το iPhone αφού υπερνικάει τα Twitterific κλπ. Για paid περιπτώσεις θα πρότεινα το Tweetie. Υποστηρίζει επίσης Geomapping των tweets και direct photo upload. Πολύ καλή η παρουσίαση των profiles των διάφορων χρηστών.

eBuddy

Το καλύτερο app για IMing και chatting. Υποστηρίζει σχεδόν όλα τα protocolls όπως AIM, MSN, Jabber, GTalk και Facebook chat (που είναι άχρηστο εφόσων υπάρχει και το Facebook app). Αφού δημιουργήσετε το eBuddy ID σας όπου συγκεντρώνετε όσα IM profiles θέλετε υπάρχουν επιλογές όπως auto-login κλπ. Επίσης μπορεί να τρέξει και στο background – δηλαδή μπορείτε να πατήσετε το home button να ανοίξετε τον Safari ή κάποιο άλλο app και εάν έχετε νέο μήνυμα ή σας μιλήσουν βγάζει notification. Γενικότερα πάρα πολύ καλό.

Google Mobile App

Ένα mashup της Google για αρκετές υπηρεσίες της. Αρχικά έχει την δυνατότητα αναζήτησης στο Web και στο iPhone (η δεύτερη μένει δεύτερη αφού υπάρχει το Spotlight) και με υποστήριξη Voice search. Το δεύτερο tab, Apps, είναι συγκεντρωμένα και έτοιμα να ξεκινήσουν links προς Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Reader, Notebook, Photos, Translate, Maps και Youtube. Πρακτικά αχρείαστα είναι τα Gmail, Notebook, Photos, Maps και Youtube αφού υπάρχουν αντίστοιχα out of the box στο iPhone. Το Calendar είναι χρήσιμο εάν το χρησιμοποιείτε γενικότερα. Αλλιώς το ημερολόγιο του iPhone είναι μια χαρά.

Flickit

Απλή, δωρεάν, γρήγορη και εύχρηστη. Η καλύτερη Flickr app για ανέβασμα φωτογραφιών. Υποστήριξη – φυσικά – geotagging αλλά και default metadata που θα μπαίνουν κάθε φορά που ανεβάζει φωτογραφία. Δεν έχω κάτι παραπάνω να πω, αξίζει 100%. Update: Τελικά geotagging δεν υποστηρίζει. Αλλά υπάρχει και άλλος τρόπος για upload στο Flickr. Που μάλλον είναι καλύτερος.

WordPress

Έλεγχος του WP blog σας, είτε wordpress.com ή self-hosted μαζί με δυνατότητες συγγραφής post, comment moderation και άλλα. Φτιαγμένο από την ίδια την Automattic, αξίζει εάν είστε ένα yet another WordPress kiddie.

Skype

Απ’ όσο ξέρω λειτουργεί μόνο over Wifi Το δοκίμασα, λειτουργεί μόνο με Wifi, άψογα όμως – αλλά και πάλι δεν μας χαλάει. Πολύ καλό app μιας και μπορείτε να μιλάτε σχεδόν δωρεάν σε νούμερα και εντελώς δωρεάν από PC (ή iPhone) σε PC (ή iPhone). Πολύ καλά φτιαγμένη. Επίσης παίρνει και by default το +30 στα νούμερα. Ακόμη, διατηρεί πλήρες ιστορικό από κάθε κλήση που πραγματοποιήσατε. Υπάρχει και η δυνατότητα για αγοράς Skype Credits κατευθείαν μέσα από την εφαρμογή.

AroundMe

Χρησιμοποιεί το GPS locator του iPhone και συνεργάζεται με το Google Maps για να σας δείξει ό,τι υπάρχει κοντά σας. Από bar και καφέ και πρατήρια βενζίνης μέχρι parkings, supermarkets και τράπεζες/ATMs. Απ’ όσο την δοκίμασα, στη Θεσσαλονίκη λειτουργεί αρκετά καλά – μέχρι και τις εταιρείες των ταξί και τις πιάτσες τους έχει.

Remote

Έλεγχος του iTunes μέσω Wifi από το iPhone. Μόνο αυτό. Αρκετά καλό – λίγο μου αργεί μέχρι να συγχρονιστεί με το pc library και που να είχα όλα τα τραγούδια μου στο iTunes! Καλή φάση γενικότερα.

Dopplr

Πολύ καλό για frequent travellers και όχι μόνο αφού έχει στα fingertips σας όλο τον Social Atlas και τα recommendations από τους χρήστες. Αξίζει εάν είστε Dopplr user και αν δεν είστε με ένα απλό account-register μπορείτε να αξιοποιήσετε την εφαρμογή. Απ’ ότι κατάλαβα απουσιάζει η δυνατότητα του plan a trip, εκτός και αν τα έχετε προγραμματίσει ήδη όποτε θα εμφανίζονται κανονικά.

Eventful

Πολύ καλό app. Βασίζεται (και αυτό) στο Geolocation και αφού κάνετε ένα λογαριασμό στο eventful.com, ορίσετε κάποιους αγαπημένους καλλιτέχνες, venues και είδη από εκδηλώσεις σας λέει τι παίζει. Δουλεύει και αυτό αρκετά καλά με τη Θεσσαλονίκη αφού έχει τον Μύλο και το Principal μαζί με πολλά μαγαζιά αλλά και πχ το Μέγαρο Μουσικής. Μου φάνηκε λίγο σαν προχειροφτιαγμένο μιας και το create an account μέσα από το app δεν λειτουργούσε όπως και τα άλλα tabs αλλά αφού έκανα account μέσω PC και μετά login στο iPhone όλα λειτούργησαν άψογα. Give it a try.

Update

Twitpic & Twitvid

Δύο πολύ μικρές και ελαφριές εφαρμογές που αναλαμβάνουν το ανέβασμα φωτογραφιών και video αντίστοιχα tweetάροντας τα, στα ομώνυμα site Twitpic και Τwitvid. Αντί λοιπόν να ανοίγετε το Twitterfon και να χρησιμοποιείτε τη build-in λειτουργία του μπορείτε πλέον να χρησιμοποιείτε τις standalone εφαρμογές – που προσωπικά εμένα με βολεύουν περισσότερο εάν δεν είναι ήδη ανοιχτό το Twitterfon. Πρακτικά όμως έχοντας αυτές τις δύο εφαρμογές και το Flickit το iPhone γίνεται το επίσημο ανεβαστήρι σας αφού θα μπορεί να ανεβάζει φωτογραφίες σε Flickr και Twitpic (Twitter) και Youtube και Twitvid (Twitter). Enjoy them! Αυτά λοιπόν, είναι κάποια must-have δωρεάν iPhone apps. Αξίζουν όλα τους μια θέση σε κάποια από τις screens σας. Όλα τους είναι full versions και όχι lite όπως πχ πολλά παιχνίδια στη δωρεάν έκδοση τους. (Θα γράψω και ένα review για κάποια addicting (free πάντα) games!) Ποιά είναι κατά τη γνώμη σας τα must-have apps; Paid και free;

Κατάφερα και εγώ πριν από λίγες μέρες να πάρω στα χέρια μου το πρώτο μου iPhone ever – σχεδόν με το που διατέθηκε στην ελληνική αγορά. Για να το αγοράσω βέβαια, μεταφέρθηκα (αναγκαστικά) από την WIND στην Cosmote, χωρίς (μέχρι στιγμής) κανένα πρόβλημα. Ευτυχώς.

Τιμή και δόξα λοιπόν στο παλιό μου κινητό iNokia 6310i. Ναι για εκείνο το ασπρόμαυρο top-phone της εποχής του μιλάω που το μόνο που υπολείπεται του iPhone είναι Wifi, κάμερα και έγχρωμη οθόνη!

Αν και διάβασα για πολλά -δυστυχώς- προβλήματα διάθεσης, ευτυχώς εγώ δεν συνάντησα κάτι αντίστοιχο μιας και πήγα στον Γερμανό έκανα τα απαραίτητα γραφειοκρατικά τερτίπια και πλέον κρατώ στα χέρια μου το beyond all other phones aka iPhone.

Ιδού λοιπόν το ταπεινό review μου από το καινούργιο μου iPhone 3GS 16Gb λευκού χρώματος (ναι, Αντώνη, λευκού – το μαύρο ήτανε out of stock αλλά και το άσπρο δεν είναι gay! Χαχα)

Ταχύτητα

Ό,τι πιθανώς έχετε διαβάσει στο net μέχρι τώρα για την νέα ταχύτητα του iPhone, ισχύουν. Για να καταλάβετε δείτε το χαρακτηριστικό video του Sigalakou στο τέλος του post. Το νέο iPhone έρχεται “φορτωμένο” με CPU στα 600MHz (αντί για ~400MHz των προηγούμενων), πολύ καλύτερη κάρτα γραφικών και διπλάσια μνήμη 256ΜΒ (από 128MB). Οι εφαρμογές ανταποκρίνονται πολύ πιο γρήγορα σε σχέση με πριν και ούτε crashάρουν τόσο συχνά όπως ανέφεραν πολλοί χρήστες.

Move sensor – Accelerometer

Ένα νέο feature του iPhone 3GS είναι η πυξίδα που έρχεται ενσωματωμένη από την Apple όπου μαζί με το Google Maps μπορεί να σας δείχνει προς τα που “κοιτάει” το τηλέφωνο πάνω στο χάρτη. Αρκετά χρήσιμο για όσους δεν προσανατολίζονται εύκολα. Επίσης υπάρχει και το shake control όπου με αυτό υποστηρίζονται οι δυνατότητες undo στο γράψιμο κειμένων αλλά και shuffle στο iPod. Αν και στην αρχή παιδεύτηκα λίγο με τα 180ο screen rotates, τώρα είμαι όλα οκ. Λεπτότις, κύριοι και κυρίες, λεπτότις!

Voice control – Voice Record

Αν και πρακτικά όχι τόσο χρήσιμο στην Ελλάδα, το Voice Control λειτουργεί άψογα – όπως και η ηχογράφηση. Με πολλές διαθέσιμες εντολές όπως “Call/Dial [Μήτσο]“, “Play songs by [Active Member]“, “Play album [Blah-Blasphemy]“, “Shuffle” και άλλες. Η ηχογράφηση τώρα προσφέρει σχεδόν τέλεια (για μένα) ποιότητα και background sound cancelling – ειδικότερα εάν ηχογραφήσετε από το handsree. Α, και το Voice Control με τις μουσικές εντολές ισχύει μόνο για τραγούδια/καλλιτέχνες/albums κλπ γραμμένα με λατινικούς χαρακτήρες.

Camera – Video

Ομολογουμένως η ποιότητα της κάμερας είναι πολύ καλύτερη – αφού έχει αναβαθμιστεί στα 3Mpx με autofocus. Μαζί με την αναβάθμιση της κάμερας η μπάλα παίρνει και το video, αφού για πρώτη φορά officialy από την Apple υπάρχει υποστήριξη εγγραφής video στα 30fp/s. Και το καλύτερο; Άμεσο video edit (crop μόνο) και δυνατότητα ανεβάσματος στο Youtube (ναι, το έκανα – δουλεύει τέλεια). Για τους φανατικούς του Flickr θα έλεγα ότι το Flickit είναι το καλύτερο free app εκεί έξω για ανέβασμα photo στο Flickr.

Μπαταρία

Δεν ξέρω πως ήτανε ακριβώς στα προηγούμενα iPhones αλλά εγώ την βγάζω με ένα φόρτισμα σχεδόν κάθε μέρα. Νομίζω το μόνο αρνητικό μέχρι τώρα.

Thousand and more apps

Ένα από τα καλύτερα features του iPhone είναι φυσικά… το Appstore. Χιλιάδες εφαρμογές – paid & free – ready to download, απ’ ότι μπορείτε να φανταστείτε. Το καλύτερο για μένα feature. Γέμισα 6 screens σήμερα και οι 2 τελευταίες με παιχνίδια. Ναι!, και παιχνιδομηχανή το iPhone μιας και παίζω μια χαρά το Assanin’s Creed και άλλα πολλά.

Μηνύματα, SMS-MMS-Mails-Notes

Πολύ καλό το concept στα μηνύματα. Μου θύμισε Gmail για τα sms. Yay! Και το landscape keyboard λειτουργεί άψογα αν και όπως είπα στην αρχή αυτά τα screen rotates λίγο με παίδεψαν στο να τα μάθω αλλά τώρα είμαι τζι-τζι. Το keyboard του iPhone είναι μακράν το καλύτερο και ταχύτερο, ειδικότερα τώρα με το autocomplete στα ελληνικά, τα sms, mails κλπ γράφονται στο πιτς-φιτίλι, πριν προλάβεις να πεις κροκόδειλος, στη κορφή κανέλλα και άλλα τέτοια.

Spotlight

Αν και δεν το πολυχρησιμοποιήσα απ’ ότι κατάλαβα είναι ο εν δυνάμει καλύτερος app launcher και indexer του κινητού. Υποστηρίζει και αυτό το πραματάκι που δεν ξέρω πως το λένε και μόλις πληκτρολογείς το πρώτο γράμμα κιόλας βγάζει τα search results. Uber cool.

Επίλογος

Δεν έχω κάτι να πω, παρά μόνο τα συγχαρητήρια μου στη μαμά Apple. Για μένα το iPhone αξίζει βαθμολογίας 11/10. Είναι κάτι παραπάνω από beyond godlike και όπως έγραψα στο Facebook status μου,

“iPhone is the great mashup of all things internets and everything else. Period.”

It is an online shop, in fact one of the simplest out there, because with only to keywords – the product you want and your location, it finds you sports gear, clothing, equipment and accessories. Used and new. Erik says, it combines the best out of the two giants, eBay and Craigslist. In fact, he says “I’ve always wanted to do something that allows me to get my mind away from skiing.”

Erik, began promoting Skodeo with just a sticker on his helmet from the Val d’ Isere World Championships this year and for the rest of the season. But, he told me that he started some Social Networking promotion and as well as other media attention which comes from the USSA team too, as he is a national team member. He started also, a Twitter, a Facebook page and the company’s blog. He plans too, via his PR guy to enter with ads some magazines too. In my question about the future plans of Skodeo and what himself sees, he replied that, the main plan for Skodeo now, is to become the premier online place to buy and sell your outdoor equipment-gear and if they accomplish that, that may move into other things as well. But for now the focus is on outdoor sports. As I understand him, he is passionate for his new venture Skodeo and he (as well myself) believes that Skodeo can and will be the #1 place for outdoor junkies to find, buy and sell their gear. The idea of Skodeo sprung from Erik’s frustration with services like eBay that don’t allow buyers to get their hands on items before they are purchased. He adds, 

“If I buy a pair of skis of eBay I have no idea what they’re going to be like until they’re at my front door and I’ve already paid for them, and with Craigslist you can only search one small area at a time.”

By solving these problems, as well as making his site more user-friendly and fun to operate, Erik believes he has created a product that outdoors enthusiasts across the country can get into. “I like to call it a hybrid between Craigslist and eBay – the best of both worlds,” said. There is also a business plan running for Skodeo. On the new site, businesses will have the opportunity to partner with Skodeo, adding their logos, a link to their own sites and online listings. “The way we’re going to try and make a profit is to make it free to the public, then businesses can come on and list an item and pay a fee to display their logo next to it. People can click on the logo to get a list of all of their items as well as their website and a map to the store,” said Erik. One goal of Skodeo is to encourage buyers and sellers to meet face-to-face to ensure the quality of the products being sold. Users will also be able to search for gear by geographic area. “It will be cool because if you look for skis for sale in Park City, you’ll be able to see how much a brand new pair is running for versus somebody who has used them.”, adds Erik. Currently Skodeo is available only for US, but Erik told me that they are not yet set up For Europe, but they are planning on making a way over there as well. 

Launchy is a great app. It’s a small bar on your desktop from which you can run any programm you have on your computer with just a few keystrokes.

For example, if I want to run Google Chrome, I just type “c” and then Enter. Or Photoshop, I type only “photo”.

Launchy is a great tool for you, because you can have at last a clean desktop which is not full of other applications, files, icons etc.

It indexes all of your programms, folders, documents and bookmarks automatically. To browse your My Documents folder for example, you have just to type “documents” and then hit the Tab button and you will see something like this,

 It saves you time and space. You can also search Google via Launchy. As an open source software, Launchy has tons of great plugins and skins for endless customization.

That’s how my desktop looks now. I call it Desktop 2.0, a social, live and active interface for the web. Streaming all of my friends’ activity over Friendfeed and communicating with them over Twitter.

Productivity

Since I didn’t had any previous experience with live activity streaming I was expecting that all my productivity would go to hell, as I wrote on a previous post. But this didn’t happen.  I was able to engage conversation in Twitter while working for the blog and do some Friendfeed comments and likes.

Usability

Twhirl works just fine with Twitter, but in Frienfeed it seems to get a bit lost. My opinion is that the slow and laggy scrolling make a bit difficult to keep up with Frienfeed over Twhirl. Also it’s a bit slow when you’re about active and fast conversations in comments of a Friendfeed item. On the other hand, it’s great for browsing and liking your friend’s activity and for the task of the live streamer. But it’s not for the heavy use, like Scoble’s one. Heh.

Desktop integration

Twhirl can integrate with your desktop realy well. First of all it’s an Adobe Air application, which means it’s cross platform and can work on your Linux, Mac and Windows system just fine. It’s also highly customizable not only visually such as opacity -which it’s great- (each Window -Twitter, Friendfeed- it’s a separated and has different options) but also how it works i.e. how it handles updates, notifies etc.

Personal thoughts

After the last buzz with the new Twitter client from Loic’s team and the Tweetdeck vs. Seesmic desktop battle, I think that if you want a not only Twitter desktop experience, Twhirl will be the perfect solution for you. Your desktop will also become a Desktop 2.0 by streaming Friendfeed and Twitter content live. In the future though, we might see Tweetdeck, Seesmic Desktop and maybe other apps too, providing Frienfeed support.

[Update: I've just started using Seesmic Desktop for my Twitter desktop client replacing the Twhirl one's. Kinda fail? But the Friendfeed Twhirl will stay here.]
