Calendar OTA syncing to Google, Mac and iPhone can be painless. Seriously. Dive in, to find out how.

It’s very easy to have a synced calendar over your Google Calendar, iCal and iPhone’s iCal.app. The basic concept works if you use Google Calendar, otherwise you just have to sync your iCals via USB and iTunes.

But, you can also setup a Google Calendar to achieve OTA syncing for your Mac and iPhone. Nice, huh?

Just follow these quick and eath steps.

Setup Google Sync

In your iPhone open Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap “Add Account” and select Microsoft Exhange. In the next screen enter your account info. In the email field type your full Google Account (ie. your Gmail). Leave the “Domain” field blank and type enter again your full Google Account as “Username” and your password as a password, obviously. Tap “Next”. If “Unable to Verify Certificate” apperas just tap “Cancel” and in the next screen enter
m.google.com
in the “Server” field. Tap “Next” and select the services you’d like to sync and “Keep on my iPhone”. (Hint: Google Sync supports Push notifications.)

— Now, you have successfully enabled OTA syncing for Google Calendar and your iPhone. Time to setup Google Calendar in iCal, don’t you think?

Setup Google Calendar in iCal

Fire up iCal and hit the Preferences (
cmd+,
). Navigate to Accounts tab and click “+”. In the pop-up enter your full Google Accounts username (email) and password. Under “Server Options” enter the following
https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/YOUREMAIL@DOMAIN.COM/user
Of course, replace with your email. Leave “Kerberos bla bla” box unchecked and click “Add”. Your Google Calendar will now appear in iCal’s list of calendars, and changes you make to your Google Calendar in iCal will be reflected almost instantly. Event information will automatically refresh every five minutes. You can change this interval by opening the iCal > Preferences > Accounts menu and selecting a new refresh interval under the ‘Refresh calendars’ drop-down. Otherwise, you can simply hit
cmd+r
to refresh manually. There’s no API limit or something.

Thanks to @diab for his initial help with this.

Questions? Feel free to comment.

How many times you found a great website with a search term you don’t remember now? How many times you were thinking “this great site which I don’t remember it’s name”? Well, Google (once again) has the right answer.

Do some Google search -the query can be whatever you want- while signed-in with your Google (Gmail) account. Click on some results you find interesting and then check google.com/history. There, there will be all your search activity. The terms you searched for, the results you clicked on and Google Reader-like trends system in which you see your search activity; search queries related to yours and some other cool features.

You can also pause your log and resume afterwards. Not only this, you can also “star” (just like Gmail and Google Reader) results you find interesting and helped you find what you want.

By default, Google Web History logs only your search queries and clicks on results. If you want though, you can expand your logging services, by installing Google Toolbar, in order to get more personalized image searches or search sites you have already visited and other features. Though as an idea it’s interesting, I don’t recommend it, because firstly, I don’t like using toolbars -the slow the browser, the shrink your website view and in general they are not so much useful, don’t worth a download/install- and secondly because Google Web History it’s enough good as it is.

Concluding, I recommend using this Google product because it can be really helpful in your web feature. Who knows? Sometime in the future, you may want again to visit “this great site with the photoshop tutorial about hardcore image manipulation”.

Interesting. If you have a Google account; probably you have one already. GMail, Google Reader, GTalk and many, many others are your kind of Google passport. So to login in a Google service you had to login with username@gmail.com probably. … Continue reading →

Interesting. If you have a Google account; probably you have one already. GMail, Google Reader, GTalk and many, many others are your kind of Google passport. So to login in a Google service you had to login with username@gmail.com probably.

But now you can change this and login with let’s say johndoe@doe.com. How? It’s very simple. Go to Google Accounts and then click on “Edit”. There at the end says something about “Add an additional e-mail address”. Just type here your e-mail address (assuming it is johndoe@doe.com) and then just wait for the confirmation e-mail, which means that you own this johndoe@doe.com e-mail and you are not phiser, spammer or something.

In a minute or so, the confirmation mail will have been laying in your inbox ready to open and read it. Do this and as usual click on the confirmation link. Succes! Now you can login to every Google app with johndoe@doe.com (assuming that’s your other e-mail). But you won’t enter your other’s e-mail password, though you enter again the Google’s Account password (GMail password).
