The main difference between those two (RSS, Twitter) is time-relevancy. And, well, acceptance and usage from the masses. That’s where RSS is behind.

Time-relevancy and the real-time newsfeed

Twitter took off for several reasons. One of them is the “instantness.” Using Twitter, a user gets to know what happens *right now* in the world, real-time, for whatever he’s interested in. Be it the Arab Spring, celebrity news, an earthquake, citizen-journalism from around the globe, breaking tech news, etc, etc. Occasionally, a user also gets to know real-time commentary and thoughts about the things happening or your usual Instagram lunch.

All those are great, don’t get me wrong. And I love them — I’ve used Twitter since 2008 in every possible way. Irrelevant status updates, easing my boredom at airports, Instagram lunches, chat-room, covering political protests in my hometown (see pictures at Flickr,) “breaking” tech news and all the usual yada yada.

But RSS is different

And most importantly, not a competitor. Well, back in the early days (2007-2008) one could argue that possibly those two technologies could compete — but not anymore.

RSS is not instant, yet it is contemporary. This is a very important logical step to make. Think of RSS as your contemporary, although not 100% real-time, editorial and commentary on all things interesting for you. You know, the aforementioned list without the Instagram-lunch tweets.

Twitter is like Reuters and Associated Press; RSS is like Time and The Economist (or any other similar media outlet based on your interests.) A good curated news platform customized by you. With the things you care about and all. And of course, there are several ways to read your RSS feeds; the most prominent one is Google Reader (I can also recommend Reeder app for iOS.)

Now, one could think of ways to make better the curation flow and how to organize your feeds, how to find new blogs and relevant information, etc — but this is not our topic.

In the same way we can distinguish between Flipboard and Zite. Though the differences are not based on time-relevancy. I will follow-up.

Που δεν έχω.

(Αυτό το post δεν είναι περί του τί έγινε το Σάββατο της 3η Δεκέμβρη, πώς μου φάνηκαν οι ομιλίες, and the usual yada yada.)

TED σημαίνει “ideas worth spreading” και αυτο ακριβώς έγινε στις 3 Δεκεμβρίου στον χώρο του Ελληνικού Κόσμου, στην Πειραιώς, από τις 11 το πρωί μέχρι τις 10+ το βράδι. Ideas, inspiration, disruption, diversity, κάτι το διαφορετικό, έξω από το comfort zone μας λοιπόν, και όχι projects, προϊόντα ή κάτι απτό. Το TED είναι για το μυαλό και τη σκέψη μας — ένα έναυσμα για τους εαυτούς μας. Δεν ξέρω πως αλλιώς να το περιγράψω, it’s all about ideas worth spreading. Period. Το TED δεν θα εξηγήσει το πως, πχ θα βγει κανείς από την εκάστοτε κρίση. Το TED δεν καθοδηγεί, το TED δίνει vision.

Παρακολουθώ το TED από το 2008 και έχω παρεβρεθεί μέχρι τώρα σε τρία: TEDxThessaloniki, TEDxVienna & TEDxAthens. Θα τολμίσω μια σύγκριση μεταξύ του TEDxVienna, το οποίο έγινε τον Οκτώβριο και του TEDxAthens. Θα περίμενε κανείς λοιπόν με γνόμωνα όλες τις current δυσκολίες τις οποίες αντιμετωπίζει η Ελλάδα και η ελληνική κοινωνία (more on that later) η οργάνωση του event να είναι μέτρια, ο κόσμος λίγος και οι ομιλητές “μικρομεσαίοι.” Έτσι ακριβώς όπως έγινε στην Βιέννη. Read that again. Το περσινό TEDxThessaloniki ήταν καλύτερο από αυτό που είδα φέτος στην Βιέννη, ενώ της Αθήνας ξεφεύγει και φτάνει, όπως είπα, σε επίπεδα TED.

Λείπω από την Ελλάδα από τις 15 Σεπτεμβρίου όπου και μετακόμισα στην Βιέννη ώστε να ξεκινήσω τις σπουδές μου. Συνεπώς έχω χάσει την επαφή με την ελληνική καθημερινότητα. Όταν έφτασα στην Αθήνα το απόγευμα της Πέμπτης εντυπωσιάστηκα. Αρνητικά. Όλα τα πρόσωπα που μπόρεσα και παρατήρησα ήταν σκυθρωπά, λυπημένα. Νικημένα από το zeitgeist και τις δυσκολίες. Φαινόταν στα μάτια όλων — απόγνωση. Με ένα βλέμμα να κοιτάει το μέλλλον (;), το χάος.

Αυτό κατάφερε και το άλλαξε το TEDx, έστω και για κάτι λίγοτερο από 24 ώρες. Το Σάββατο λοιπόν έβλεπα μόνο χαμόγελα, θετική διάθεση για το μέλλον, the life, universe and all. Δεν ξέρω αν είμαστε οι τρελοί αλλά επιτέλους είδα έναν θετικισμό ο οποίος λείπει από το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της κοινωνίας — κακώς.

Επιτέλους είδα ζωηράδα, αυθορμητισμό και ενέργεια, άκουσα νέες ιδέες, γνώρισα νέα άτομα, άλλα τα οποία τα ήξερα μόνο μέσα από το web και έκανα catchup με παλιούς φίλους και φίλες. Με μία λέξη, ήταν καταπληκτικά.

Σίγουρα, το TEDx και το κάθε παρόμοιο (στην πιο ευρεία έννοια του TED & του “παρόμοιου”) δεν θα μας βγάλει από την κρίση και το εκάστοτε πρόβλημα, it’s not the holy grail. Μπορεί όμως να λειτουργήσει ως καταλύτης για έναν νέο τρόπο σκέψης, θετικό, ρεαλιστικό, visionary, έξω από αρνητισμό, μιζέρια και μη-προσπάθειας για κάτι καλύτερο. Έναν τρόπο σκέψης ο οποίος μπορεί να tackle humankind’s big problems. And can push the human race forward.

It’s all about ideas. Then comes execution.

Κλείνοντας και έχοντας ξεχάσει μια φράση την οποία ήθελα να γράψω στην προηγούμενη παράγραφο, θέλω να δώσω τα συγχαρητήριά για την διοργάνωση του event και το ευχαριστώ μου στην οργανωτική ομάδα του TEDxAthens που μου προσέφερε την ευκαιρία να είμαι κριτής στο TEDx Challenge, στους ομιλητές, εθελοντές, τις 154 συμμετοχές στο TEDx Challenge, τους 3 finalists και τον έναν νικητή, το κοινό και όλους όσους βοήθησαν.

“I’ll try to be an amateur, young, careless, stupid once again.”

This quote—this quote, I loved it. It made me think how essential is to have in mind those things. Things that drive you forward, push you forward.

Today I also happened to stumble upon Konstantina’s blog called Amateur Notes. Not a coincidence—I was sure about that. So, these two events, Yianni’s reply and Konstantina’s blog name, made me think once again about amateurism, passion, carelesness, fresh ideas, risks and pushing things forward.

Having this mindset helps you stay active and creative. Passion is essential not to succeed in life, but in order to enjoy life and your work. If you enjoy it, then you have succeeded.

To the hell with unnecessary formalisms. We need professional amateurs. People who will always explore, try and do new things. People who stay active, who create, take risks, try and fail. Amateur means also loving what you do, as Konstantina correctly says. And by loving what you do, you become more and more better at what you do. You enjoy it. You have succeeded.

The organizational part

The first ever App Camp was focused exclusively on development of mobile apps or tablet PC apps. There were 3 App Campuses throughout Greece—Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras. The App Camp’s main goal was to turn good ideas for mobile apps into commercially viable products and services for the global market, all accelerated through this two-week program. Teams were consisted of at minimum 2 members, no single/solo founders were allowed, if I may say so.

App Campuses were mainly co-lab workspaces, such as Co-Lab in Athens and Thermi-Link in Thessaloniki. Patras’ App Campus was based in Indifex’s HQ, though—a very nice and cozy HQ of a great and promising global startup. Each App Campus provided the basics such as internet access (well, obviously, it’s 2011 and we were developing mobile apps for the TCP’s sake), comfortable couches (at least Thermi-Link here at Thessaloniki—I enjoyed it very much when I was napping and reading my Instapaper saved articles on the iPad 2), video-streaming & projectors for the mentors’ sessions which were available to all teams via UStream. App Campuses also served as the meeting point with the mentors.

Speaking of mentors, the participating teams were guided by mentors who they represented a variety of specialities and skill-sets ranging from development, design, marketing and to intellectual property. Almost each mentor had to prepare a session about his specialty. For example Petros talked about Github (for which he actually works for), Dimitris for mobile apps marketing and so on. Mentors were also available not only via person-in-person meetings at each Campus but also via IMs, Twitter, Skype and email, constantly.

Right in between of the weeks, in the first weekend of the program, the App Camp gig (teams and mentors) went for a 3-day trip to the App Resort, Friday to Sunday. The first ever App Resort was at Pelion, right in the middle between Athens and Thessaloniki. It was not a holiday-trip. Instead, the teams attended many meetings and sessions, coded almost everywhere—from their rooms to by the pool, enjoyed beers at night and various other geeky startup stuff.

The teams and 4sqwifi

I think you already know about my 4sqwifi idea-project which started back in January ’11 as a simple Foursquare initiative only now (to be precise, very soon) to have its own iPhone app, so I won’t bother you with the details: what it’s all about, how it works and how you can take part. On the other hand, if you don’t know anything about 4sqwifi (that’s not bad) and you’re interested on learning more check out 4sqwifi’s website and its presentation at App Camp’s Demo night right below:

Since I didn’t attend the App Resort weekend because I had to do business in Athens (that did sound very badass-like) I won’t talk about the other teams a lot, only some generic words and rants. From what I heard and saw, the level of all teams (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras) was decent. Some had experienced engineers, some not—but that’s why applied for in the first place (at least me)—to gain experience, not only to launch a product and call it quits. Some apps are cool indeed and look promising—can’t wait to see how the evolve and adapt into new environments and the upcoming challenges.

The 4sqwifi App Camp team consisted of Panos Oikonomakis, Lead Developer aka JavaScript poet, Gerasimos Tsiamalos who kindly provided his ninja design skills in order to design an incredible UI and Eleni Gizi who also provided her artisanal skills for to design 4sqwifi’s logo, and well, me who (tried) to do all these tasks before the guys would enter the team. It was a pain, to be honest. I deeply appreciate each one’s commitment to the team, trying to balance between personal work and life with this project. They could easily decide not to take part and work on some personal stuff, but they decided to take part with 4sqwifi and build something for the fun of it.

Closing rants

App Camp was a great experience. I would, without a second thought, do it again. It’s time for a post-4sqwifi idea now to be developed. Surely, App Camp could improve some things but those aren’t any significant draw-backs. A good idea would be also to have two App Camps per year. A summer and a winter session (just like YC’s batches). That’d be very interesting, challenging and will push each time the limits of creating, thinking, engineering and launching.

Update about 4sqwifi

Due to personal issues which I cannot write about (yet) 4sqwifi’s app launch will be delayed for a few weeks. Sorry, folks. I promise it won’t take long.

Anyway, here are my two cents.

Πριν το event

Έφτασα στο Royal Hotel με τον Νίκο και τον Ανέστη μετά από ένα συναρπαστικό “Rally Βροχόπολις” (credit goes to Nick) λόγω της ξαφνικής τροπικής βροχής στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Με το που φτάσαμε, άρχισε το socializing με τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά. Γνώρισα επιτέλους από κοντά τον Βασίλη (και τον Ανέστη, ήδη από το αμάξι), την Ζαχαρένια, την Κωνσταντίνα. Με τον Δημήτρη είχαμε γνωριστεί από το προηγούμενο βράδι της Παρασκευής πίνοντας συζητώντας. Λυπηρή ήταν η διαπίστωση πως ενώ υπήρχε, το WiFi δεν δούλευε και πολύ καλά με αρκετές απώλειες στο σήμα.

Οι Παρουσίασεις

Ύστερα από μια μικρή καθυστέρηση λόγω βροχής, το event ξεκίνησε δυναμικά με τον Δημήτρη ο οποίος μίλησε για το blogging, πως να γράφει κανείς καλύτερα, do’s & don’ts, blogging & review ethics και κάποια άλλα tips. Σειρά είχε η Ζαχαρένια, η οποία ίσως είχε την πιο communicative παρουσίαση που έχω δει (kudos, Sug). Μίλησε για το πως να επιτύχουμε ένα not another WordPress blog. Μετά μίλησα εγώ (imo, μέτρια παρουσίαση, τα είπα λίγο γρήγορα και πρόχειρα. Έχασα την ευκαιρία για την οποία μιλάει ο Γιάννης, αλλά we learn from failing, so it’s ok). Ήρθε η ώρα του Θάνου μετά από εμένα, με μια ωραία παρουσίαση σχετικά με τυπογραφία και font picking problems & solutions στο WordPress—και γενικότερα στο web. Ο Βασίλης έκανε ίσως την πιο αναλυτική παρουσίαση που είδαμε και κάλυψε εκτενέστερα το θέμα WordPress as CMS με ένα δυνατό how-to. Ο Γεράσιμος μας είπε την γνώμη του — και έκανε τον συνήγορο του διαβόλου — για τα Frameworks και τη σχέση τους με το WordPress. Ο ίδιος δεν τα χρησιμοποιεί και έχει αναπτύξει ένα προσωπικό toolset. Για αυτό τον λόγο τον χαρακτηρίζω ως Lucky Luke των developers. Σειρά του Γιώργου, evangelist της Microsoft Ελλάς ο οποίος έκανε δύο παρουσίασεις. Η πρώτη σχετικά με το web platform που προσφέρει πλέον η Microsoft και η δεύτερη για την επόμενη μέρα του web: HTML 5. Μετά από την Γιώργο, παρουσίασε ο Βασίλης (host του event) το BuddyPress — πως μπορούμε να φτιάξουμε ένα social network βασισμένοι στο WordPress και τέλος, μίλησε ο Φώτης για την ένωση του CodeIgniter με το WordPress και τις δυνατότητες που προσφέρει.

My take on all presentations: δεν μπορώ να ξεχωρίσω κάποια συγκεκριμένη. Όλες μου άρεσαν για διαφορετικούς λόγους, όλες κάλυψαν εξαιρετικά τα topics τους. Οι υπόλοιποι ομιλητές ήξεραν ακριβώς τι έκαναν και όλοι ήταν fluent στον λόγο τους and to the topic. Από εμένα, πολλά μπράβο και ευχαριστώ για αυτά που είδα και άκουσα.

Η (αναμενόμενη;) γκρίνια

Event χωρίς γκρίνια, δεν είναι καλό event. Έτσι λένε στο χωριό μου (insert #lol here). Well, για δύο πράγματα θα “γκρινιάξω”. Το πρώτο είναι σχετικά με το πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίσαμε σχετικά με το WiFi στον χώρο του Royal Hotel. Ευτυχώς που είχα 3G στο κινητό. Το δεύτερο είναι σχετικό με την ημερομινία του event, το οποίο συνέπεσε με το event του Parallaxi mag, Θεσσαλονίκη Αλλιώς.

Το bonus

Ναι, υπάρχει και bonus. Spoiler alert: Ένα video που ετοιμάζει ο Ανέστης για το Away.gr. Πολύ γέλιο. Το μόνο που μπορώ να πω είναι: συνεντεύξεις. Αναμένουμε λοιπόν να τελιώσει με το μοντάζ ο Ανέστης και να το δούμε uploaded.

Bonus #2: notes

Σε μερικές παρουσιάσεις κράτησα κάποιες σημειώσεις στο notebook μου. Here you go λοιπόν. Sorry για τα περίεργα γράμματα, έγραφα πολύ γρήγορα. Οι φωτογραφήσεις (insert 2nd #lol here) έγιναν στις καρέκλες του Καφεναί (όπου γράφτηκε και το post), εξού και τα πλακάκια στο background, τα οποία δεν θα τα είχατε παρατηρήσει έαν δεν το έγραφα.

Κλείνοντας, δεν πρέπει να ξεχάσουμε να δώσουμε πολλά συγχαρητήρια στην ομάδα του Βασίλη και τον ίδιο, για το τρέξιμο τους ώστε να πραγματοποιηθεί ένα τόσο καλό event. Kudos, team.

To concept του Open Coffee ήταν η παρουσίαση 10 νέων που μέσα από τις ιδέες τους, την εφαρμογή καλών πρακτικών και τη χρήση νέων τεχνολογιών επιδιώκουν να αλλάξουν το μέλλον όλων μας. Όπως είπα, ήταν μια πολύ ωραία μέρα γιατί παρουσίαζα και εγώ—ήμουν δηλαδή ένας από τους 10 νέους blah blah blah. Όλα ξεκίνησαν από μία πρόσκληση του Γιώργου Γάτου και τον ευχαριστώ πολύ για αυτήν την ευκαιρία.

Ο τίτλος της παρουσίασης μου ήταν (και είναι ακόμη και σήμερα) “Keep calm, hack the world and do epic stuff”. Το θέμα της είναι το πως μέσω του internet μπορούμε πλέον να κάνουμε κυριολεκτικά άπειρα πράγματα, αρκεί να το θελήσουμε. Δεν μετράει πλέον το μέγεθος της ιδέας ή το πόσο crazy-ass είναι, αλλά το πόσο πάθος έχει κανείς και πόσο σκληρά μπορεί να δουλέψει. Η θέληση βέβαια, προϋποθέτει και δημιουργικότητα, ιδέες και τελικώς, την υλοποίηση αυτών—μερικά στοιχεία που λείπουν σε γενικές γραμμές από την current πραγματικότητα και καθημερινότητα μας στην Ελλάδα (δυστυχώς). Συνδυάζοντας όλα αυτά και το πνεύμα του “keep calm, hack the world and do epic stuff” μπορούμε να κάνουμε όμορφα πράγματα.

Σε γενικές γραμμές  μου άρεσαν πάνω-κάτω όλες οι παρουσιάσεις. Ξεχώρισα όμως αυτές των Klou και του Γιώργου, στις οποίες εξηγούσαν πως δουλεύει πλέον ένας freelancer designer με πελάτες από όλο τον κόσμο και το πως μπορεί (ή όχι, διότι είναι στο χέρι μας) η Θεσσαλονίκη να μετατραπεί σε μια “Sallonikon Valley” αντίστοιχα. Και οι δύο με κράτησαν από την αρχή ως το τέλος, με πολύ καλά visuals αλλά και όσα είπαν οι δυο τους.

Αυτό που όμως μου έκανε μεγαλύτερη εντύπωση ήταν ο εξαιρετικά πολύς κόσμος που είχε έρθει—όχι μόνο για το Open Coffee αλλά γενικότερα, για το όλο event του Parallaxi. Το αμφιθέατρο του ΝΟΗΣΙΣ ήταν πραγματικά γεμάτο, κόσμος στεκόταν ακόμη και έξω από αυτό για να παρακολουθήσει τις ομιλίες (ναι, ακόμη και στην δική μου, lol). Ήταν πραγματικά τόσος πολύς ο κόσμος που η καλύτερη περιγραφή για αυτό είναι να αρκεστούμε στο “ήταν πραγματικά τόσος πολύς ο κόσμος” γιατί δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ κάτι ακριβέστερο.

Όπως είπα παραπάνω, μίλησα και παρουσίασα τις ιδέες μου και εγώ στο Open Coffe. Αν και μια εβδομάδα και κάτι ψιλά αργοπορημένος, μπορείτε να δείτε την παρουσίαση μου ακριβώς κάτω από αυτές τις γραμμές που γράφω τώρα.
Do it, πιστεύω αξίζει.

Πριν από δύο μέρες λοιπόν, εντόπισα το πρώτο ελληνικό Foursquare Special Offer για το Public της Στοάς Χιρς, στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Here’s the proof. Η πρώτη μου αντίδραση ήταν πολύ θετική (δεν κρίνω το περιεχόμενο της προσφοράς χωρίς να σημαίνει κάτι αυτό, απλά it’s not my point now), μιας και δεν περίμενα ειλικρινά να δω adoption και τέτοια χρήση του Foursquare από ελληνική επιχείρηση μέσα στα επόμενα 1-2 χρόνια τουλάχιστον. Βέβαια, ο Στέλιος Λανδράκης στο Twitter μου είπε πως

Και σαν να μην έφτανε αυτό, σήμερα είδα στο site του Πλαίσιου ένα announcent για το καλωσόρισμα του Foursquare με την πρώτη προσφορά για τους Γιάννηδες και Γιάννες (χρόνια καλά by the way!) που γιορτάζαν αλλά και για την αυριανή προσφορά όπου με ένα check-in στο μαγαζί χαρίζουν κάποια “secret” yet δώρα. Proof, again. Από αυτό, μπορώ να συμπεράνω πως ο ανταγωνισμός για ακόμη μια φορά ωφελεί εμάς, τους end users και καταναλωτές.

Αν και δεν είμαι τόσο “φίλος” των διαφημίσεων θέλω να δώσω τα συγχαρητήρια μου στο Πλαίσιο και στο Public για τις κινήσεις τους. Αποδεικνύουν πως θέλουν να έρθουν πιο κοντά στον καταναλωτή, να δημιουργήσουν μια διαφορετική σχέση (γιατί έτσι και αλλιώς business is all about relationships) και να διαφημιστούν με έναν δωρεάν, πολύ πιο αποτελεσματικό και νέο τρόπο από π.χ. τα door-to-door φυλλάδια/καταλόγους.

Επίσης, πολύ θετικό είναι και το Twitter presence και των δύο επιχειρήσεων (@PublicStores, @PlaisioComp) καθώς και το engage που κάνουν με τον κόσμο, αφού δεν ανεβάζουν απλώς “ξερά” links προσφορών ή εταιρικών νέων. Άλλο ένα μπράβο!

Μένει λοιπόν να δούμε στο μέλλον περισσότερες ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις να υοθετούν το Foursquare μοντέλο hyperlocal marketing με geolocated ads, special offers και γιατί όχι με “αξιοποίηση” των ήδη mayors.

Disclosure: δεν έχω καμία σχέση ούτε με τα Public stores ούτε με το Πλαίσιο.

There is—as some say—a moral dilemma which goes something like this:

Does Wikileaks know that by leaking all these documents does not protect the lives and privacy of not only whistle-blowers but also USA, other countries, diplomats and so on? Do they know that they seem like terrorists?

Even Wikipedia’s co-founder (I do not remember his name, nor I’m going to search for it) wrote a lengthy essay replying to some Twitterers (and me) why Wikileaks is a threat to US, why it’s not a “wiki”, etc.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

I’d like to focus on the tech/web side of the situation.

But before that, I think it’s better to write what exactly Wikileaks is: a not-for-profit media organisation. Their goal is to bring important news and information open to the public. Wikileaks provides an innovative, secure and anonymous way for sources to leak information to their volunteer.

They rely on a network of dedicated volunteers around the globe since 2007. That is, they do not steal or take illegally the files. People whistle-blow them. People who work for the Governments (mainly from the US one).

Back to the Internets side.

As I wrote a year ago regarding Piratebay founders’ jail-verdict, lately regarding the “troktiko” case in Greece and the #logo31 backlash meme, I came every time to the very same conclusion: you can’t stop the internet.

For our current state of the world—the corruption, the mysticism of our political leaders, parties and governments, the feeling that something goes on (actually manipulated from) behind the scenes, etc—makes the want of openness and truth even more demanding.

We need Wikileaks.

Wikileaks is unstoppable. Just like Piratebay, 4chan’s /b/, Anon, hackers, torrents, file-sharing and many others.

The Internet itself is unstoppable — and always right. And cannot be regulated.

Assange did change the whole world history from now on.

No matter how many times the US government or any other government or individual will DDoS them, censor them (the Amazon case) or ask (in a very unpolite way, I guess) other companies to stop interaction with Wikileaks, no matter how many “rape” charges Assange has for bounty, no matter how much will they try to regulate the Internet, no matter anything, the Internet will be always here, living and we will also be here making new BitTorrents, making new Napsters, making new VPNs, new file-sharing methods. And we will be unstoppable.

So this is why we need Wikileaks and why the Internets is right. Always.

But as in all good movies, the heroes lose in the beginning but have an epic victory in the end anyhow. That’s the only thing hollywood ever taught us.

Αυτό που βλέπαμε τόσα χρόνια από το εξωτερικό —το PirateBay, το Kopimi, οι Anon και πολλές άλλες ομάδες, που αλλάζουν τον AFK (Away From Keyboard και όχι IRL) κόσμο— επιτέλους το είδαμε και στην Ελλάδα. Είδαμε ένα μικρό πρώτο βήμα, τυχαίο ή όχι δεν έχει σημασία.

Και όλα αυτά, για αυτό εδώ το logo:

Πέρα από τις όποιες αντιδράσεις που δημιούργησε πχ στους designers-γραφίστες ως προς τη διεξαγωγή του διαγωνισμού ή στο Twitter ως προς τον “διασυρμό” της Μαρίας, της σημαντικής εμπνεύστριας του επικού λογότυπου, το #logo31 κατάφερε να είναι ο πυρήνας για την δημιουργία αρκετών creative sites (logo31 Tumblr, Twitter account), blog posts, του γνωστού Twitter hashtag καθώς και τη ψήφιση, αναζήτηση και upload παρόμοιων τέτοιων logos στο site της ΟΝΝΕΔ.

Για ένα Σαββατοκύριακο, όλη η ελληνική net κοινότητα ασχολήθηκε με αυτό το logo. Για ένα Σαββατοκύριακο αποδείξαμε πως για κάποιο λόγο όταν δεν χειρίζεται κάποιος σωστά το internet, αυτό θα βρει ένα μαγικό τρόπο να τον καταστρέψει. To Streisand effect του #logo31 ήταν αρκετά μεγάλο για τα δεδομένα της Ελλάδας. Όπως είπε ο Κωνσταντίνος, “το #logo31 θα το έχουν case study οι διαφημιστικές σε λίγους μήνες”.

Ελπίζω να συνεχίσουμε σαν κοινότητα να δημιουργούμε τέτοια effects και ακόμη μεγαλύτερα. Remember, the internet is always right. Και κάπου εδώ κολλάει ξανά το Kopimi. Κατεβάστε το PDF και διαβάστε το (ελάχιστες σελίδες, μία λίστα 100 πραγμάτων και 2 κείμενα μισής σελίδας.)

Secondly (this is the great news!), I am now member of Epic Planks ski team. Epic Planks is a Belmont, MI based ski startup making high quality handmade skis. I am very fortunate that they offered me a spot as an Ambassador and member of the team. This, practically means I will have soon the Crop Duster (previously Floater) ski — a ski for deep, pure, awesome powder. I am very stoked!

One of this year’s negative things, is that I am pausing with ski racing — only for this ski season — because I need to study and get some grades for the university. Whatever (again)…

Now, around mid-September I got a mail from the Secretary of Youth inviting me to a unique event that took place in Thessaloniki’s planetarium venue regarding entrepreneurship in the youth and how can we increase entrepreneurship in this social group, etc. I was very much stoked (yes, again) for this, because I was the only one under 25-30 years old dude there from throughout Greece. I will, later, post my thoughts about this event (in Greek, though).

So what is my current status now, you might ask (and you’re damn right). My current status reads: a shitload of studying, SAT & TOEFL & IELTS exams, lot’s of coffee drinking, kind of tweeting a lot rather than blogging, almost no PC (actually, it is a MacBook Air), lot’s of SMS and 3G.

But! There’s a surprise coming very —like, really— soon. It has to do with geeks, the internets, the Greek internets, blogs and international big, great, awesome blogs. Uhm, what else? No, I’m not telling ya anything else. I said — it’s a surprise.

And what about my tech-catching-up: tried Diaspora* (opinion: it’s cool; very cool; but needs a hell of more code to be properly useful and usable), a life-hack with the iPhone, GMail and Google Apps for your domain, the re-design of this blog and saving lot’s of great articles at my Twitter favorites to read when I’ll have time.

Bottom-line before I go back to studying (seesh): hack the world! (Okay, sorry me, this was a very personal update for what I used to write — I promise I won’t write here anything else like this in the future, lol.)

This might be a trend — or an effect on people from the notorious Privacy problems. Well, to admit it, I had a fully customized profile. A selected few could see my wall, write, comment, etc while others could not see all of my photos — just some albums in most cases. I had also a list of “friends-I-don’t-know”, who could only see, let’s say, my profile picture.

I was “evangelizing” Privacy settings to my friends. Most of them didn’t care, others looked like “Oh, that’s interesting. I’ll do it.” And from the guys who did not care some of them are asking me how to customize Privacy now. That being said, I don’t think Privacy was an issue for the masses. People didn’t care or didn’t know — that’s exactly were Zuck was and is betting on. Unawareness.

A little bit off-topic: There’s an interesting thought that this “opting-out Facebook” thing is something like a “being alternative” trend — being against masses. Being not “hip” or something. That could evolve into peer-pressure later (in a few months — under a year) — more on peer-pressure in a minute.

The masses will never deactivate/delete their Facebook all-together. They’ll never care for privacy (admit it, we, only the geeks care for such things or evangelize them and so on). They’ll never care why “Like” and not “Fan”. They’ll never care about what technologies are being used by Facebook. They’ll never care why Facebook evolves that way (if they know why Facebook evovles in the first place from a plain soc. net. to a all-things-social-we-control-your-internet thing). They’ll never do something out of the ordinary. In fact, they are bound to one another. Heck, that’s why they’re a mass in first place!

My guess, if there’s any way to achieve or even understand why will ever (if they, honestly) move out from Facebook in masses, this is peer-pressure. Imagine something like a tsunami wave of influences spread very fast. I quit, you quit, he quit. Oh, another one has just quited. This series of events — chain reactions will affect them. They’ll start eventually saying “Uh, oh, something’s going on here. Everyone’s leaving. Nothing else to do here alone, I’ll leave too.” Obviously, this is a pure “early-adopters vs. laggards” concept — and answers both to the “why” and “how” of the question “Why and how teens move out from Facebook.”

But yet again this is, in my opinion, very unlikely to happen. As I can see and observe from friends and people I know, most of the Facebook users are kind of Facebook addicts. But if the thing starts rolling, that equals too a pretty much decent number of people moving out, it won’t stop. Picture this.

Now, picture Diaspora. This is what I am waiting for. This is something really cool. Personally controlled, do-it-all, distributed open-source social network. I pray that it will have easy-to-install packages and installation in general, so it can attract the non-early-adopter geeks, aka the masses and the mainstream. I think this is a good way for pushing peer-pressure. I think Diaspora can become the tipping point, the change for many users.

We’ll see. We cannot predict, we cannot be sure.

Recently they turned 40 episodes and made a contest, giving out for free an iPhone app up to 20€.

Yup, you guessed correctly. I won. It’s a fun thing to feel, but for a third time in my life or so I did win a contest. The app I chose is Reeder — the best RSS (aka Google Reader) reader in iPhone (it’s in my Must-have iPhone apps: the Ultimate collection post). Word.
