It’s very handy since it catches sneaky family and co-workers red handed. See a demo screenshot here.

But there’s a small bug in DeskLock.

At the “lock” screen (the left one at the screenshot) someone can actually see which applications/windows are running and in a nutshell, the whole desktop, due to a Expose and/or OS X’s Active Screen Corners (show the desktop) bug. Though, that someone cannot interact with any of the the windows, he/she can still see them in a pretty much detailed way.

To watch the bug in action you must have Expose and Active Screen Corners enabled (with the “Desktop” option) and of course, DeskShade installed. Simply lock the computer and then make the 4-fingers gesture for Expose and/or mouse over a corner to enable “show desktop”. Pretty much simple.

See a quick and short demo video I made.

Today I got back my Macbook Air after a two and a half weeks of service. See, the monitor had something like dead pixels and then it evolved to something like a complete monitor failure. All was black. Anyway, everything’s fine now. Point is, that the past weeks I had to use my old netbook. I recently mentioned about why Air wins the netbook but this time is different.

There are three core differences (except the price) that make me say, yet again, “Air rocks big time.”

Reason 1: The Screen

Bigger. Brighter. Clearer. Better. That is, the Air’s screen. It may be only 13.3″ comparing to the 10″ of my netbook, but may I say you that this is a BIG difference. It’s like using a 24″ iMac or something like that. The feel after the transition between Air and netbook or vice versa is remarkable. It’s not a Retina display, I know, but it’s the feel that relaxes your eyes and your focus. More workspace. More happiness.

Reason 2: CPU and the such

2.13Ghz of pure Intel Core 2 Duo power. Versus the Intel Atom N270 1.60Ghz. I guess, Air wins here too. Mind the graphics too. The Air uses a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M whilst on the other hand, the Turbo-X notebook is making cool things with a Intel GMA 950 GPU. Nevertheless, the RAM plays a significant role too; 2Gb of RAM instead of 1Gb is also a good sign. Summing up, hardware on the Air rocks big time, for it’s size capabilities.

Reason 3: Software

I’m not gonna talk about iLife. We all know it’s a great software suite/package. I’m gonna talk about how smoothly every single program runs in Mac OS X. No crashes. No lags. No nothing. Even the OS is pretty much like a “rockstar” itself. Your work-flow is never stopping. Plus that you can find many great apps such as Coda, Tweetie, Things, Grapher and many, many more. Basically, it’s the UX (User Experience) that’s a solid “win” for everyone.

Concluding, I have to admit that once you go Mac you never come back. It’s a whole different realm of computers and technology. Of concept and ideas. Of design and user experience. Despite that Steve may becoming sometimes an ass, you can’t deny that Apple, nowadays, makes the best machines out there. Call it iMac, Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iWhatever; it’s a fact. And I highly recommend you becoming a switcher soon.

Web 3.0 from Kate Ray on Vimeo.

Web 3.0 must & will be the future, the evolve from Web 2.0. Location will not play anymore a core-role as it’s been fragmented already. We have built tons of geo-loc enabled applications that satisfy every need, thus now we need to link data. As Sir Tim-Berners Lee said in his TED talk: “Open your data, open your data!”

We need to make computers understand all of an item’s connections with other things/people/everything. That’s trillions of trillions of collections. Here we get to the question as Clay Shirky puts it:

I’ve often joked that the Semantic Web is a witness protection program for AI researchers. That what the Semantic Web held out was the possibility that instead of making machines think like people, we could describe the world in terms that machines were good at thinking about. So we would switch from trying to build up brains in silicon, and instead rerender the actual world as information. And that gets very quickly to one of the deepest, you know, questions in all of Western philosophy, which is: Does the world make sense? Or do we make sense of the world? I don’t think you can unambiguously describe the world. I don’t think you can describe the world, or even large subdomains of the world, in a way that all observers or even most observers will agree with.

You see, this is very tricky.

What do you think? Is Semantic Web real possible in computing or even in philosophical terms, or it is not?

It’s been almost a year since I first learned the basics of Ruby — which now I’ve forgotten by the way, but the interest in programming hasn’t declined. For the last couple of weeks I was trying to make my way around C, C++ or Java tutorials. Hopefully, it was my friend, Dimitris, who sent me a bunch of cool resources and links from the Ioanna University, Department of Computer Science. Professor’s presentations, tutorials, syllabus and other valuable stuff for a newbie in programming. Despite all this great data, for some reason I kept digging about other languages and I found about Python out.

Python is a very powerful programming language, yet easy to use, understand and write. It has efficent high-level data structures and a simple, but effective, approach on object-oriented programming. It’s interpreted nature makes it an ideal language for scripting and application development on most platforms, as all modern OSes come with Python pre-installed.

Python is Open Source, a great example of FLOSS (Free/Libre & Open Source Software) software. You can get great documentation from a huge worldwide community based on knowledge sharing. It’s created and continuously improved by hackers; that’s what makes Python so good.

In short, Python’s advantages are: simplicity, easy to learn, FLOSS, high-level language structure, portability, interpreted (maybe, the best feature), object-orientation-based, extensibility, embedability and last but not least the extensive libraries maintained by the community.

For what I can understand it’s the best language to start learning programming with.

So, I searched a little bit more and discovered some great free, open source, maintained by hackers, tutorials and books. I fully recommend them. If you are interested in Python and don’t have any previous programming skills or knowledge, be sure to check out these very helpful resources:

Non-Programmer’s Tutorial for Python 3, on Wikibooks. (from the left print/export menu, I recommend downloading the Wikibook as a .PDF.)

A Byte of Python, written by Swaroop. (this is the book I’m currently reading. Probably the best to start with, and probably the best in the world for every newbie or even a more experienced user. Download it as .PDF.)

Learning to program, by Alan Gauld. (also a very good tutorial/book. From the left-panel menu, scroll-down and click on download in .PDF format.)

I highly recommend you printing the .PDFs. You can work and learn better if what you read is printed and not on an LCD monitor. The Byte of Python book is 118 pages but this shouldn’t be a problem. The Wikibook is, if I can recall correctly, 73 pages and Gauld’s book is a bit more than 100 pages, too.

As I am learning Python now, whenever I stumble upon a good hack, script or even a little piece of something I’ll make, I will let you know. It’s so fun coding in Python, you should try it out too.

Open Source moves the world.

Location, Location, Location

Ήδη το Twitter σκέφτεται για location-based ads.

Social-media centrism

Στην εποχή του “What happens in Vegas, stays on Facebook”, των status updates, των σχολίων στα άρθρα και των check-ins όλα μοιράζονται.

Emerging technologies

Με το
<video src="/video/redcarpet.ogg" width="400" height="300" controls>
Με features όπως programmatic interfaces (APIs) for to create arbitrary graphics in the new canvas, find your position on the globe, cache code and data, and offload compute-intensive tasks to keep the interactive portion of the browser responsive όχι μόνο ξεχνάει το παρελθόν για τα καλά αλλά οριοθετεί τα δικά της standard για τα μελλοντικά web apps και όχι μόνο.

[Bonus] The cloud

Οnline storage, online backups, accessible from everywhere και άλλα πολλά είναι τα πλεονεκτήματα του cloud. Aπό το πολύ απλό ανέβασμα φωτογραφιών στο Flickr και λειτουργώντας το σαν photo gallery-archive έως και το πιο σύνθετο personal data server στο Amazon AWS.

[Update] The Semantic Web

<item rdf:about="http://dbpedia.org/resource/Cat">Cat</item>
Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως είναι σαν ένα network ανάμεσα στα web items/links/etc — it builds relationships atop the links and more.

Το πως τελικά θα έχει διαμορφωθεί το internet στα επόμενα χρόνια μένει παρά μόνο να το ζήσουμε. Εμείς είμαστε αυτοί που θα το διαμορφώσουμε. To web προχωράει μπροστά. Εσείς πως πιστεύετε θα κινηθεί το internet στα επόμενα χρόνια; Ποιές θα είναι οι κύριες πτυχές ανάπτυξής του και γιατί;

There is one more thing.

Eco-friendly & economy friendly.

Wifi connectivity.

Αν η Apple και η Υπουργός Παιδείας δουν αυτό το άρθρο και έχουν την θέληση — έχουν και τον χρόνο και τα χρήματα να την υλοποιήσουν. Το μέλλον είναι εδώ, γιατί να καθυστερούμε;

As you may know, I love portability, because – especially in winter, I travel a lot. That’s why I bought a netbook last year. It did the job great. It is small, lightweight, portable, the battery lasts pretty much long and is comfortable to travel with. When I am at home, I plug it to a 19″ Samsung monitor and I feel like I’m using a normal desktop PC or just a more powerful laptop. But why did I change my mind now, almost a year after using and evangelizing netbooks?

Did you notice the word I used in the first paragraph? Powerful. Indeed, netbooks are ultralight, small and all that great stuff, but they miss something very important and since I was using one of them for a year, as a desktop replacement – it did all my work, let me tell you that. They miss power.

Power in both CPU and GPU.

Last week, my dad got a Macbook Air as a gift. Such a geek I am, I took it and tested it someway. The results are pretty much obvious for me now.

Lightweight & Ultraportable

Let’s face it. Macbook Air is the lightest and slimmest computer out there. It’s thin like an envelope and can travel with you everywhere, due to these two characteristics. Air may be not that small, like a netbook but the weight and portability provide a huge advantage.

OS

Mac OS X definitely owns Windows 7. Not only the GUI is better but also the backend. I’ve been using Windows XP and Windows 7 in my netbook and now Mac OS X and I can clearly see the differences. Speed, design, architecture. Every Mac is fully featured with a ton of greatful tools, like Finder and Airport – the greatest Wifi app I’ve ever used.

Battery life

4 hours. 4 hours of being of the cable. With the lightest laptop ever made. Priceless. And when you need it, the magnetic power cable is priceless, too. Boy, do I love this.

Power

By power, I mean both CPU and GPU power. I used my netbook for movie editing (doh!) for a little project called Fight The Line and it was laggy and slow as hell – in XP and 7. I wasn’t able to watch 720p HD movies in Youtube or Vimeo. That was a giant loss. Instead, in the Macbook Air everything runs smoothly. I can edit (and watch of course) even 1080p true HD video straight from my Toshiba S10 videocamera.

Conclusion

I’m totally convinced now that netbooks are not anymore worth buying. Macbook Air wins them all. I prefer to give some money more, but to take back in quality, hardware, community, software and total user experience. I need power. Netbooks can’t give any power. On the other hand, they give portability, slimness, lightweight – all things ideal for traveling. But the Mac gives power too among all these factors. For sure I prefer the Mac.

Do you have and use or planning to buy netbook? If not, why? Or do you still prefer the big, classy laptops?

Υπομονή λοιπόν μέχρι την Τετάρτη 27 Ιανουαρίου για το keynote και το “One more thing” του Steve Jobs.

Since I was using Twhirl for my Twitter desktop client, I thought I could try it out for Friendfeed too. Creating the Twhirl Friendfeed profile and linking it with my Friendfeed via the Remote Key was a very quick and easy procedure. Then I had to change a bit my desktop to fit Twitter, Friendfeed and Launchy.

That’s how my desktop looks now. I call it Desktop 2.0, a social, live and active interface for the web. Streaming all of my friends’ activity over Friendfeed and communicating with them over Twitter.

Productivity

Since I didn’t had any previous experience with live activity streaming I was expecting that all my productivity would go to hell, as I wrote on a previous post. But this didn’t happen. I was able to engage conversation in Twitter while working for the blog and do some Friendfeed comments and likes.

Usability

Twhirl works just fine with Twitter, but in Frienfeed it seems to get a bit lost. My opinion is that the slow and laggy scrolling make a bit difficult to keep up with Frienfeed over Twhirl. Also it’s a bit slow when you’re about active and fast conversations in comments of a Friendfeed item. On the other hand, it’s great for browsing and liking your friend’s activity and for the task of the live streamer. But it’s not for the heavy use, like Scoble’s one. Heh.

Desktop integration

Twhirl can integrate with your desktop realy well. First of all it’s an Adobe Air application, which means it’s cross platform and can work on your Linux, Mac and Windows system just fine. It’s also highly customizable not only visually such as opacity -which it’s great- (each Window -Twitter, Friendfeed- it’s a separated and has different options) but also how it works i.e. how it handles updates, notifies etc.

Personal thoughts

After the last buzz with the new Twitter client from Loic’s team and the Tweetdeck vs. Seesmic desktop battle, I think that if you want a not only Twitter desktop experience, Twhirl will be the perfect solution for you. Your desktop will also become a Desktop 2.0 by streaming Friendfeed and Twitter content live. In the future though, we might see Tweetdeck, Seesmic Desktop and maybe other apps too, providing Frienfeed support.

[Update: I've just started using Seesmic Desktop for my Twitter desktop client replacing the Twhirl one's. Kinda fail? But the Friendfeed Twhirl will stay here.]

So, after some search around the web, I decided to buy a Turbo-X Topnote netbook. Yeah, it’s not Asus, Acer, MSI or HP but it’s getting the work done. With a bit less money I bought a netbook similar to Asus EEEPC1000H Black. The current setup is a Intel Atom N270 1.60Ghz CPU, a Intel GMA 950 GPU, a 160Gb HDD, a 10.1″ monitor at 1024 by 600, 1Gb RAM at 5400rpm and Wifi 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth and Ethernet and weights about 1kg. On my desktop it is connected to a 19″ Samsung Syncmaster 940NW monitor which runs at 1440 by 900 having no problem with the built-in GPU.

So why to a buy a netbook?

First of all, price. People with the current economic crisis, are afraid to spend much money, so the idea of getting a laptop with 300 euros/dollars is great. Secondly, portability. It’s great to have everywhere you go a small, lightweight computer that can do almost anything -just like a desktop or a laptop. On the other hand, a netbook will not replace your main laptop or desktop. It can serve as a second computer. As Paul mentioned,

The cycle of disconnecting/reconnecting and then readjusting windows on both displays has become such a burden I can hardly find the motivation to move to the couch much less take it out of my apartment.

The same applies to me, as my Gericom is always under my office. Now, I mostly use my netbook -even for Photoshopping. I take it everywhere with me and with a ~2 hours battery life it rocks! There is the the disadvantage of the too small screen, but I have compromised with it. It’s not a huge problem anyway.

Many people say that why to buy a netbook, better go buy an iPhone. It’s smaller, it is from everywhere connected to the internet and in general can do about the same things. But with a netbook you can do a hell of more things, because it runs a full OS and not a mobile one. Plus that it has a normal keyboard too.

What you should keep in mind

Search for netbooks that have a 10″ monitor. It’s a problem using a small monitor let alone a smaller than 10 inches. Be aware of the battery life, it should be around 2 hours and not below. People mention also the problem of the small keyboard. Personally, I didn’t had any. Be sure also what OS you want, because you can choose from Windows and Linux. Considering connectivity, I chose my own with a Windows Xp installation but I dual boot with Ubuntu. There are netbooks from 4Gb SSD HDD drive to 160Gb HDD drive (as mine is). SSD drives are far more fast but with low capacity, on the other hand most HDD drives in netbooks run at 5600rpm.

What do you prefer? A netbook or a laptop? Why? Are you into buying a netbook? Why or why not?
